Despite media attention and public awareness, recent advances in pharmaceutical and medical developments, heart disease in women is under-diagnosed, under-treated, and under-managed. Many women fail to present in the clinic when symptomatic, because of responsibilities at home or at work. Often the first presentation follows a cardiac event. Women are excluded from many clinical trials regardless of age or cardiac history, simply because most trials are aimed at male patients. This best-selling, updated title, aimed at changing this treatment of women's cardiac issues, covers all aspects of female cardiovascular disease. It is required reading for all practitioners who assess female patients.

Principles of Gender-Specific Medicine examines how normal human biology differs between men and women and how the diagnosis and treatment of disease differs as a function of gender. This revealing research covers various conditions that predominantly occur in men, and as well conditions that predominantly occur in women. Among the subjects covered are cardiovascular disease, mood disorders, the immune system, lung cancer as a consequence of smoking, osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity, and infectious diseases. * Gathers important information in the field of gender-based biology and clinical medicine, proving that a patient's sex is increasingly important in preventing illness, making an accurate diagnosis, and choosing safe and effective treatment of disease * Addresses gender-specific areas ranging from organ transplantation, gall bladder and biliary diseases, to the epidemiology of osteoporosis and fractures in men and women * Many chapters present questions about future directions of investigations

This guide to conducting clinical research emphasizes elements that are important for patient safety and investigator survival. Stone provides an overview of how research is conducted for drug companies and how to become involved in it, as well as career opportunities in medical research. She explains how sites attract studies, preparation, audits and regulatory requirements, recruiting volunteers for a study and implementing the protocol, career development, and ethics, politics, and social issues, including aspects relating to race, gender, and religion. Worksheets, forms, and supplementary information are provided in the extensive appendices. The guide is mostly aimed at physicians, but can be of use to nurses, study coordinators, and investigators. Stone is an internist and infectious disease specialist who has extensive experience in conducting clinical trials. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.co.

Even though slightly over half of the U.S. population is female, medical research historically has neglected the health needs of women. However, over the past two decades, there have been major changes in government support of women's health research-in policies, regulations, and the organization of research efforts. To assess the impact of these changes, Congress directed the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to ask the IOM to examine what has been learned from that research and how well it has been put into practice as well as communicated to both providers and women. Women's Health Research finds that women's health research has contributed to significant progress over the past 20 years in lessening the burden of disease and reducing deaths from some conditions, while other conditions have seen only moderate change or even little or no change. Gaps remain, both in research areas and in the application of results to benefit women in general and across multiple population groups. Given the many and significant roles women play in our society, maintaining support for women's health research and enhancing its impact are not only in the interest of women, they are in the interest of us all.
