Women’s labour migration is an important aspect of labour mobility and can be a crucial source of empowerment for women with women migrant workers making vital socio-economic contributions to their families and communities. This book is the outcome of the seminar sponsored by the NCW, New Delhi where 31 papers were presented, out of which 16 papers have been selected for this volume. This book throws light on the impacts of the covid-19 pandemic on women migrant workers, gendered sensitive migration and integration policies, adult migrants’ education: current challenges from a gender sensitive perspective, working life, social life and integration from a gender sensitive perspective, gendered norms and roles in migratory contexts, gender-based violence and migration, representations and constructions of migrant masculinities and femininities. This volume makes the case for the fair treatment of female migrant workers from the global South who are employed in wealthy liberal democracies as care workers, domestic workers, home health workers, and farm workers. An international panel of contributors provide analyses of the ethical, political, and legal harms suffered by female migrant workers, based on empirical data and case studies, along with original and sophisticated analyses of the complex of systemic, structural factors responsible for the harms experienced by women migrant workers. This collection provides insights into international labor migration in the context of globalization through the lens of international law and national law of some Asian countries that are the home countries of migrant workers. The main focus of the volume is on challenges regarding international labor migration that some developing countries in Asia have been confronted with. It investigates and determines current situations in some Asian developing countries having the majority of overseas migrant workers. It also places some emphasis on national regulatory systems of policies and regulations regarding overseas labour migration from those countries. In addition, in light of the current situation on international labour migration, the chapters outlines some recommendations and solutions for those selected developing countries in Asia to resolve existing problems to effectively ensure the protection of the rights of overseas labor migrants and governance of international labor migration in accordance with international standards.

Women Migrant Workers in China's Economic Reform studies unmarried women migrant workers in China. As international migrants in China's richest province, they work in silk, one of China's oldest and most symbolically-charged industries. Through extensive interviews and a wide-ranging interpretation of the secondary literature, this book brings an interdisciplinary approach to its study of power and identity. Gender, class, and local identities matter in the factories and streets of a one-industry town, and municipal and factory leaders seek to rework these over-shifting forces to build a low-cost, reliable labour force. The women in question seek to rework these disadvantages by the same forces, have other aspirations!

COVID 19 impacted the migrant population significantly compared to the general population. The increased vulnerability is due to several factors such as precarious living conditions and working environment; inaccessibility of healthcare services; exclusion of migrants in the pandemic plan of states and countries; mass movement of migrants back to their homes; and loss of employment, and economic impact. Thus, there have been multiple risks attached to labour migration and migrant health during the spread of CVOD 19. The book on COVID 19 and Migrant Health is a compilation of papers presented during the National E-conference on Migrant Health and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), organized as part of the Indian Council for Social Science Research- Impactful Policy Research in Social Science (ICSSR-IMPRESS) funded project by Rajagiri College of Social Sciences (Autonomous), Kerala. COVID 19 has severe ramifications on the lives of interstate migrant workers in India. The papers included unravels the impacts on livelihood, health, the mental health of the migrant workers. Issues faced by migrant children, women and men are discussed in different articles. Social Work response to situations caused by COVID 19 is also discussed. Empirical papers on the lives of migrant workers during the COVID 19 pandemic in Delhi, Odisha, Bihar, Kerala and Karnataka form part of different chapters in the book. A global perspective on the right to health of migrant children in COVID 19 is also discussed in one of the chapters. This book provides rich and provocative comparative studies of South and Southeast Asian domestic workers who migrate to other parts of Asia. These studies range from Hong Kong, Macau, and Singapore, to Yemen, Israel, Jordan, and the UAE. Conceptually and methodologically, this book challenges us to move beyond established regional divides and proposes new ways of mapping inter-Asian connections. The authors view migrant workers within a wider spatial context of intersecting groups and trajectories through time. Keenly attentive to the importance of migrants of diverse nationalities who have labored in multiple regions, this book examines intimate connections and distant divides in the social lives and politics of migrant workers across time and space. Collectively, the authors propose new themes, new comparative frameworks, and new methodologies for considering vastly different degrees of social support structures and political activism, and the varied meanings of citizenship and state responsibility in sending and receiving countries. They highlight the importance of formal institutions that shape and promote migratory labor, advocacy for workers, or curtail workers rights, as well as the social identities and cultural practices and beliefs that may be linked to new inter-ethnic social and political affiliations that traverse and also transform inter-Asian spaces and pathways to mobility.
