This book explores the history of women’s engagement with writing experimentally. Women writers have long used different narratives and modes of writing as a way of critiquing worlds and stories that they find themselves at odds with, but at the same time, as a way to participate in such spaces. Experimentation—of style, mode, voice, genre and language—has enabled women writers to be simultaneously creative and critical, engaged in and yet apart from stories and cultures that have so often seen them as ‘other’. This collection shows that women writers in English over the past 400 years have challenged those ideas not only through explicit polemic and alternative representations but through disrupting the very modes of representation and story itself.

Caribbean Women Writers and Globalization offers a fresh reading of contemporary literature by Caribbean women in the context of global and local economic forces, providing a valuable corrective to much Caribbean feminist literary criticism. Departing from the trend towards thematic diasporic studies, Helen Scott considers each text in light of its national historical and cultural origins while also acknowledging regional and international patterns. This book offers new insights on socially and culturally engaged Gothic ghost stories by twentieth century and contemporary female writers; including Shirley Jackson, Angela Carter, Toni Morrison, Ali Smith, Susan Hill, Catherine Lim, Kate Mosse, Daphne du Maurier, Helen Dunmore, Michele Roberts, and Zheng Cho. Through the ghostly body, possessions and visitations, women’s ghost stories expose links between the political and personal, genocides and domestic tyrannies, providing unceasing reminders of violence and violations. The book examines prominent literary works from the past two decades by Russian women writers dealing with the Soviet past. It explores works such as Daniel Stein, Interpreter by Ludmilla Ulitskaya, The Time of Women by Elena Chizhova, Secondhand Time: The Last of the Soviets by Svetlana Alexievich, and In Memory of Memory by Maria Stepanova, and uncovers connecting thematic structures and features. This book examines late nineteenth-century feminism in relation to technologies of the time, marking the crucial role of technology in social and literary struggles for equality. The New Woman, the fin de siecle cultural archetype of early feminism, became the focal figure for key nineteenth-century debates concerning issues such as gender and sexuality, evolution and degeneration, science, empire and modernity. While the New Woman is located in the debates concerning the 'crisis in gender' or 'sexual anarchy' of the time, the period also saw an upsurge of new technologies of communication, transport and medicine. As this monograph demonstrates, literature of the time is inevitably caught up in this technological modernity: technologies such as the typewriter, the bicycle, and medical technologies, through literary texts come to work as freedom machines, as harbingers of female emancipation.

This volume discusses how Angela Carter’s Nights at the Circus, Margaret Atwood's The Blind Assassin, and A.S. Byatt’s “Morpho Eugenia” approach the question of female subjectivity and how they relate this question to language and literature. It shows that the conscious intertextuality and genre transgressions in these writings reflect the authors’ awareness of the woman writer’s problematic position in the literary tradition which does not allow woman a subject position. In this discussion, Luce Irigaray’s criticism of language and theory as the producer and ally of the patriarchal order is used as the main reference point. The book reads these in the light of Irigaray’s analyses of how language creates the category of woman. It highlights that Atwood and Carter are more in accord with Irigaray’s insistence on a language that can produce a female subjectivity by acknowledging, representing and symbolizing the desire of, and for, the mother, while Byatt, on the other hand, suffices with deconstructing the male subject without devising a subjective identity for women.

This book is an examination of the narrative strategies and stylistic devices of modernist writers and of earlier writers normally associated with late realism. In the case of the latter, Edith Wharton, Kate Chopin and Willa Cather are shown to have engaged in an ironic critique of realism, by exploring the inadequacies of this form to express human experience, and by revealing hidden, and contradictory, assumptions. By drawing upon insights from feminist theory, deconstruction and revisions of new historicism, and by restoring aspects of formalist analysis, Kathleen Wheeler traces the details of these various dialogues with the literary tradition etched into structural, stylistic and thematic elements of the novels and short stories discussed. These seven writers are not only discussed in detail, they are also related to a literary tradition of dozens of other women writers of the twentieth century, as Jean Rhys, Katherine Mansfield, Stevie Smith and Jane Bowles are shown to take the developments of the earlier three writers into full modernism.
