Although much less well known than some other nineteenth century female campaigners, such as Florence Nightingale or Emmeline Pankhurst, Dorothea Beale is nonetheless deserving of wide recognition for her pioneering, and at times radical, ideas. Dorothea's work for the education of girls made just as significant an impact on the liberation of women as did that of Florence Nightingale in ennobling the nursing profession or Emmeline Pankhurst in drawing attention to women's political inferiority. Although very much a woman of her times, through her work as Principal of the Cheltenham Ladies' College, her writings, her speeches and her widespread involvement in societies promoting women's interests, Dorothea helped to show what women were capable of, providing them with greater confidence and self-belief. Drawing on a wide range of original sources, this book traces Dorothea's life and work. It considers the formative influences of her youth, her response to the disappointments of her early career and examines how her own educational ideas evolved, were put into practice and came to influence schools and colleges both at home and abroad. As well as an in-depth analysis of her pioneering work in Cheltenham, her many other interests, connections and involvements, including her contribution to the suffrage campaign are also explored. However this book is not just a story of one woman's achievements, great though they were. There is an attempt to understand Dorothea as a person with reflections on her character and personal life throughout and the book ends with an appraisal of the many contradictions to be found in this intriguing 'conservative reformer'. Dorothea Beale was a woman whose quiet and unassuming manner hid a strong sense of vocation, a fierce determination and an undoubted practical ability to achieve her ends. Dorothea would have been amazed at the changes that occurred in the position of women in the century after her death in 1906, and yet it was in no small measure thanks to her work that this breakthrough in female opportunities occurred.

Despite nearly two decades of advocacy for equal education and employment, women remain clustered in the lowest-paid, lowest-status jobs in clerical, service, and industrial work. Occupational segregation also continues within professional and technical fields. This book examines the critical link between sex stereotyping in education and occupational inequities in the work place. Contributors first assess the impact of sex and race stereotyping and discrimination on girls in school. Next they examine workplace issues–including job training, access to non-traditional jobs, and occupational segregation. A final section takes up the question of the role of education in perpetuating or alleviating women's poverty. The book concludes by offering a number of policy recommendations and strategies for change.

Originally published in 1987, this title was first submitted as a doctoral dissertation at the University of California, Berkeley in 1974. Completed just as the years of expansion in higher education were drawing to a close, it reflects the growing doubts of the period as to the ability of formal education provision alone to effect major changes in the distribution of socio-economic privilege at the group level, whether as between the sexes, classes, or ethnic groups. Reforms in women’s education had traditionally been dealt with as a small part of the women’s emancipation movement. This book approaches the education reforms in a different way and begins with the question of which social groups participated in the movement. Seen from this point of view, a primary interest of the reforms is the function they served in promoting a redefinition of the status and roles of a social elite.

Frances Mary Buss, who began her teaching career at fourteen, was only twenty-three when she founded the North London Collegiate School, the forerunner and model of Girls’ High Schools throughout the country. Her friend Dorothea Beale was for nearly fifty years Principal of Cheltenham Ladies College, which she changed from an insignificant local school into a school and college with a comprehensive teacher training department and with upwards of a thousand pupils. She was also the founder of St.Hilda’s College, Oxford. Imbued with strong religious principles and endowed with immense energy and industry, the two women exercised a powerful influence on the development of women’s education in Britain. Yet both had to contend with bitter opposition and disillusionment. This is the first joint biography of Miss Buss and Miss Beale and it gives a fascinating comparison of their methods and widely differing characters. The author had access to hitherto unpublished material, and gathered information from pupils of both schools and from others who knew the two headmistresses, ensuring that the book, whilst full of anecdotes, is also authoritative.
