Decolonizing Foreign Language Education interrogates current foreign language and second language education approaches that prioritize white, western thought. The reader is encouraged to analyze the forms of cultural struggle that can be found within the world language classrooms of the United States including the likely impact those struggles have on members of the dominant and subordinate cultures. This edited book expands the current scholarship on teaching world languages for social justice and equity in K-12 and postsecondary contexts in the US. Over the past decade, demand has been growing for a more critical approach to teaching languages and cultures: in response, this volume brings together a group of scholars whose work bridges the fields of world language education and critical approaches to education. This book discusses how to approach critical literacy in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. It responds to the concerns of educators who get enthusiastic about teaching critical literacy, but become perplexed when they start reading about its theories.
