Written Corrective Feedback For L2 Development

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Written corrective feedback (CF) is a written response to a linguistic error that has been made in the writing of a text by a second language (L2) learner. This book aims to further our understanding of whether or not written CF has the potential to facilitate L2 development over time. Chapters draw on cognitive and sociocultural theoretical perspectives and review empirical research to determine whether or not, and the extent to which, written CF has been found to assist L2 development. Cognitive processing conditions are considered in the examination of its effectiveness, as well as context-related and individual learner factors or variables that have been hypothesised and shown to facilitate or impede the effectiveness of written CF for L2 development.

Written Corrective Feedback In Second Language Acquisition And Writing

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

What should language and writing teachers do about giving students written corrective feedback? This book surveys theory, research, and practice on the important and sometimes controversial issue of written corrective feedback, also known as “error/grammar correction,” and its impact on second language acquisition and second language writing development. Offering state-of-the-art treatment of a topic that is highly relevant to both researchers and practitioners, it critically analyzes and synthesizes several parallel and complementary strands of research — work on error/feedback (both oral and written) in SLA and studies of the impact of error correction in writing/composition courses — and addresses practical applications. Drawing from both second language acquisition and writing/composition literature, this volume is the first to intentionally connect these two separate but important lines of inquiry.

The Relevance Of Corrective Feedback For The Development Of Writing Competences In Secondary Level Efl Classrooms

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Kassel (Institut für Fremdsprachenlehr- und Lernforschung, Interkulturelle Kommunikation), course: Hauptseminar: Error Analysis, language: English, abstract: Given that mistakes and errors are inevitable in second language acquisition, EFL teachers have to provide corrective feedback (CF) for their students to promote writing accuracy. In second language acquisition research, CF is a topic of great interest since Truscott (1996) argued that error correction has no significant effect for students’ new pieces of writing. Ferris (1999) and several other advocates have proven that different types of CF can be beneficial for L2 writing accuracy; however, as this thesis will demonstrate, direct and indirect types, as well as focused and unfocused types of error correction rely on different didactic approaches with different effects in students’ language awareness to be expected. As studies on written corrective feedback present divergent results, further research has to be done to get deeper insight into feedback practices that also include personality factors and other individual learner differences that might affect students’ perceptions of different CF strategies.

Research Methods In The Study Of L2 Writing Processes

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This volume brings together the perspectives of new and established scholars who have connected with the broad fields of first language (L1) and second language (L2) writing to discuss critically key methodological developments and challenges in the study of L2 writing processes. The focus is on studies of composing and of engagement with feedback on written drafts, with particular attention to methods of process-tracing through data such as concurrent or stimulated verbal reports, interviews, diaries, digital recording, visual screen capture, eye tracking, keystroke logging, questionnaires, and/or ethnographic observation. The chapters in the book illustrate how progress has been made in developing research methods and empirical understandings of writing processes, in introducing methodological innovations, and in pointing to future methodological directions. It will be an essential methodological guide for novice and experienced researchers, senior students, and educators investigating the processes of writing in additional languages.

Collaborative Writing In L2 Classrooms

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this first book-length treatment of collaborative writing in second language (L2) classrooms, Neomy Storch provides a theoretical, pedagogical and empirical rationale for the use of collaborative writing activities in L2 classes, as well as some guidelines about how to best implement such activities in both face-to-face and online mode. The book discusses factors that may impact on the nature and outcomes of collaborative writing, and examines the beliefs about language learning that underpin learners' and teachers' attitudes towards pair and group work. The book critically reviews the available body of research on collaborative writing and identifies future research directions, thereby encouraging researchers to continue investigating collaborative writing activities.

Handbook Of Research On Student Centered Strategies In Online Adult Learning Environments

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

As traditional classroom settings are transitioning to online environments, teachers now face the challenge of using this medium to promote effective learning strategies, especially when teaching older age groups. Because adult learners bring a different set of understandings and skills to education than younger students, such as more job and life experiences, the one-size-fits-all approach to teaching does not work, thus pushing educators to create a student-centered approach for each learner. The Handbook of Research on Student-Centered Strategies in Online Adult Learning Environments is an important resource providing readers with multiple perspectives to approach issues often associated with adult learners in an online environment. This publication highlights current research on topics including, but not limited to, online competency-based education, nontraditional adult learners, virtual classrooms in public universities, and teacher training for online education. This book is a vital reference for online trainers, adult educators, university administrators, researchers, and other academic professionals looking for emerging information on utilizing online classrooms and environments in student-centered adult education.
