A Feminist Approach To Anne Of Green Gables By Lucy Maud Montgomery

BOOK EXCERPT:

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: A, University of Gdansk (English Philology), course: American Studies, language: English, abstract: To what extent does the representation of women (and men) in the work "Anne of Green Gables" by Lucy Maud Montgomery reflect the place and time in which the work was written? How are the relationships between men and women or those between members of the same sex, presented in the work? The thesis deals with the question whether Anne of Green Gables series could be seen as a feminist one. Anne Shirley might be seen as a feminist character - she is smart, intelligent, achieves more than the majority of her peers, she is not feeble and she is able to escape some of the most prevailing stereotypes about women of the Western world. Anne Blythe, however, changes into a matron, whose only interests are gossiping, matchmaking and being Mrs. Dr., a respectable woman. Relationships shown in the earlier novels are quite feminist—they are either equal or the woman is the empowered partner. Characters are allowed to voice critical opinions on men and marriage, and these opinions are not ridiculed. Later on it changes for the worse—women are always the submissive ones, spinsters are not respectable, and unconventional opinions are mocked. Anne of Green Gables series is not a feminist one - only the earlier novels possess the necessary characteristics.

Anne Of Green Gables

BOOK EXCERPT:

L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables is one of the best-known and most enduringly popular novels of the twentieth century. First published in 1908, it has never been out of print, and it continues, nearly a century after its first appearance, to appeal to new readers in many locations around the world. Anne of Green Gables is the story of how a little girl, adopted from an orphan asylum by a brother and sister seeking a boy to help them on their Prince Edward Island farm, grows to responsible young adulthood and, as she grows, brings light and life to her adoptive home. Although it is, as Montgomery described it in her journal, a “simple little tale,” it has nonetheless generated not only an international readership but, more recently, an increasing critical interest that focuses on the text’s engagement with social and political issues, its relation to Montgomery’s life and her other writing, and its circulation as a popular cultural commodity in Canada and elsewhere. This Broadview edition is based on the first edition of Anne of Green Gables. It includes a critical introduction and a fascinating selection of contemporary documents, including contemporary reviews of the novel, other writings by L.M. Montgomery (stories, writings on gender and on writing), and excerpts from the “Pansy” books by Isabella Macdonald Alden.

Aesthetic Approaches To Children S Literature

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

As undergraduate and graduate courses in children's literature become more established and numerous, there is an intense need for a textbook that offers aesthetic rather than educational approaches to children's literature. This work fills that void by providing students of children's literature with a comprehensible and easy-to-use analytical tool kit, showing through concrete demonstration how each tool might best be used. The chapters are organized around familiar and easily recognized features of literary texts (e.g. author, genre, character). Theoretical issues are illustrated by specific texts from the North American children's literature canon. The book explores the particular aesthetics of children's fiction and the ways critical theory may be applied to children's texts, while remaining accessible to a college readership without prior specialized knowledge of literary theory. Each chapter includes a short introduction to a specific theoretical approach (e.g. semiotics, feminist, psychoanalytic), an example of its application to a literary text, a number of activities (study questions, reading exercises), and suggestions for further explorations.

Modern Messages From Green Gables On Loving Living And Learning

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Many people have read and been inspired by the Anne of Green Gables novels. However, few may know very much about the extraordinary intuition, brilliance, creativity, and productivity of the Anne-author, Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942). Fewer still may understand how Montgomery was much ahead of her time as a feminist and an advocate for women’s roles in society—as reflected in her writings and life story. This book encourages readers to imagine how Montgomery’s life experiences influenced “the life of Anne” and consider how these real and imaginary lives offer messages for 21st century men and women—their loving, living, and lifelong learning. It offers such understanding by revivifying Anne a little more than 100 years after she left her literary existence in 1919, to portray her life story—fundamentally tied to loving. The revivified Anne and her physician husband Gilbert Blythe, review the life, challenges, and triumphs of their creator, and how Montgomery’s example might offer messages for us on living and learning. Anne and Gilbert know that Montgomery was a keen observer of others—akin to many of the characters in her books. They describe how Montgomery imaginatively captured the essence of the people around her. The associations include not only the benevolent individuals on her beloved Prince Edward Island and in Ontario, Canada, but also the bigotry, sexual repression, and small mindedness common in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The revivified Ann and Gilbert in this book illuminate Anne’s and Montgomery’s lives that portray integrity, tolerance, compassion, generosity, perseverance, and graciousness—even in times of personal adversity. When these traits are combined with lifelong learning, creativity, and a dedication of service to humanity, we realize enduring messages for all members of the global community in our modern times.
