This book offers a collection of state-of-the-art conversation analytic work on the impact of different types of digital technologies and media on social interaction. It furthers our understanding of whether and to what extent the varying practices of digital interaction can be considered adaptations of the basic organisations and resources of co-present face-to-face interaction. The chapters explore the emerging practices in contemporary digital interaction and in interaction related to digital technologies. The volume is organised into four sections according to the platform or type of digital interaction: mobile messaging, social media, video conferencing, and human-computer interaction. Each of the chapters highlights an interactional or linguistic phenomenon – an action, a practice, a sequence, or a larger structure. Nevertheless, the app remains a vital tool for communication and connection, particularly in countries where other messaging apps are restricted or banned. Its continued popularity is a testament to the users' trust in its security and reliability.

The notion of World Englishes which is now being increasingly recognized by most linguists and scholars has stimulated the search for a new linguistic model that can accommodate and facilitate the use of English as a lingua franca. On the other hand, the paradigm of World Englishes also necessitates recognition of various Englishes from different parts of the world. ln Indonesia, more teachers are starting to understand that todays English language instruction is no longer aimed at merely imitating foreign varieties, such as American English, British English. and Australian English. However, they are faced with a dilemma because it means that they might need to give up the long-established prescription for American, British. or Australian English as the only desired language model. The conference accommodates topics for linguistics in general including issues in language, literature, local cultural studies, philology, folklore, oral literature, history, art, education, etc. Selecting and reviewing process for the The International Seminar On Recent Language, Literature, And Local Culture Studies in New Normal “Kajian Mutakhir Bahasa, Sastra, dan Budaya Daerah di Era Normal Baru” was very challenging in that it needs a goodwill of those who were involved in such a process. More than ten experts were invited in reviewing, giving suggestions for revision and at last selecting the papers. On that account, we would like to forward our appreciation and our gratefulness to such invited experts for having done the process. Papers in the proceeding are expected to give academic benefits, especially in broadening the horizon of our understanding in language, literature, and local culture studies in new normal. From Twitter to Reddit, Facebook, and WhatsApp – social media is a part of modern everyday life. Studying the language used on social media platforms presents great opportunities as well as challenges to corpus linguists. The contributions in Corpus Approaches to Social Media address technical, ethical, and methodological issues by showcasing in-depth social media studies as conducted by corpus scholars. The chapters are based on a variety of social media platforms and include corpus perspectives on the language of online communities, linguistic variation in short media texts, and the role of images in computer-mediated communication. A particularly strong point of the collection are the detailed accounts of the methodological aspects of working with social media corpora. The volume features research applying traditional corpus linguistic methods to social media data as well as novel and innovative research methods for the analysis of multimodal material and atypical corpus texts.

This book advocates a new post-digital linguistic ethnography approach to unpacking mobile communication and enabling a more informed understanding of individuals’ communicative practices in cities today. Drawing on data from a group of ordinary working people, multilingual individuals from superdiverse cities across the United Kingdom, the volume brings observations from this data together to form a new concept of ‘resourcefulness’ as a means of explaining the emergent sense of agency individuals develop towards remediating existing forms of technology in their everyday lives. The book in turn establishes the notion of the ‘networked individual’ by way of demonstrating the ways in which communicative practices cross spaces and platforms. Further chapters detail examples to highlight resourcefulness at work in enabling more efficient business communication, routes to self-expression and the creation and development of social support systems, while a concluding chapter looks at both the limitations and possibilities of resourcefulness and directions for future research.
