BOOK EXCERPT:
A common question posed to PhD students from friends and family is, “What will you do after?” But many students are too focused on the PhD itself and have not yet had a chance to sufficiently think about post-PhD life. This book is a collection of 22 interviews with those have completed a PhD and then are now in an academic position or another career path. In either case, they have all been successful and have a multitude of insights to share with those who are interested in considering a variety of careers. Academic careers share many commonalities with many non-academic careers, with skills learned within academia being valuable in other career paths as well. Nearly all the individuals interviewed here have been on the job market recently and understand today's job climate. No other book on the market includes the diversity of perspectives presented here. In particular, the focus on psychology and neuroscience draws from a variety of individuals that have similar training but have nonetheless taken divergent paths.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In the geological expanse of academia, there are a few individuals who stand out not just for their scholarly contributions, but also for their profound impact on the lives they touch. Dr. (Prof) Saradambal Ramachandran Singara Subramanian, or Dr. SR Singara Subramanian as he is affectionately known, is one such individual. As a professor in the Department of Earth Sciences and the joint controller of examinations, Faculty of Science, at Annamalai University, his influence extends far beyond the realms of his professional titles. He was also the former head of the Department of Earth Sciences at Annamalai University, a testament to his leadership and expertise in his field. I first encountered Dr. SR Singara Subramanian when I embarked on my PhD journey, a journey that began later in life than most. Despite my age and unconventional path, Dr. SR Singara Subramanian saw potential in me and welcomed me into his academic family with open arms. His belief in my abilities gave me the confidence to pursue my research with vigor and determination. One of the most striking qualities of Dr. SR Singara Subramanian is his liberal approach to guidance. Unlike some mentors who impose their ideas on their scholars, Dr. SR Singara Subramanian always took the time to listen to my thoughts and ideas. He nurtured my research, encouraging me to explore new avenues and think critically about my work. His guidance was never stifling; instead, it was a gentle nudge in the right direction, allowing me to grow and develop as a scholar in my own right. But perhaps what sets Dr. SR Singara Subramanian apart is his unwavering commitment to his principles. Throughout my time working with him, I have seen firsthand his dedication to academic integrity and ethical conduct. He is a role model not just in his academic achievements, but also in his steadfast adherence to his values. This book is a tribute to Dr. SR Singara Subramanian's remarkable legacy. It is a testament to his belief in his scholars, his liberal approach to guidance, and his unwavering commitment to his principles. But more than that, it is a celebration of the profound impact he has had on the lives of those fortunate enough to work with him. I hope that this book serves as a fitting tribute to a man who has truly made a difference in the world of academia.

An invaluable guide for scholars stifled by the traditional academic route In the increasingly competitive world of academia, simply mastering your discipline is no longer enough to guarantee career success or personal fulfillment. The Entrepreneurial Scholar challenges scholars at all stages—from doctoral students to tenured professors—to break free from conventional academic pathways by adopting an entrepreneurial mindset. What opportunities can you create based on who you are, what you know, and who you know? Drawing on her experiences in higher education, start-ups, and management consulting, as well as interviews with a range of academics and entrepreneurs, Ilana Horwitz provides a road map for those stifled by traditional academic norms and expectations. This book calls on scholars to create ideas—not just consume them. It offers strategies to thrive in academia with limited resources and in the face of uncertainty. Embracing an entrepreneurial mindset entails viewing yourself as a knowledge producer, enhancing collaboration, creatively identifying resources, and effectively sharing your ideas. Horwitz empowers all scholars—particularly women and first-generation, low-income, and BIPOC individuals—to see themselves as proactive agents in their educational and career trajectories, despite structural constraints, unclear expectations, or unresponsive advisors. With actionable advice, real-world applications, and inspiring success stories, this guide is vital for anyone aspiring to excel within and beyond the ivory tower.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book examines satirical portrayals of academia as exhibited in works of academic fiction, revealing the way in which this genre represents University life to the broader reading public and enables members of that sub-culture to critically engage their own negotiations of individual, communal and institutional identity. This work should appeal to scholars interested in the literary genre of satire, in contemporary University life, and in literature. contemporary cultural issues, problems, and performances by way of interpretations of academic fiction that observe this phenomenon. Composed by practicing academics who also appreciate satire aimed at their profession, the authors offer this collection as a correction to increasingly cynical portrayals of academic life. Instead, the authors provide interpretations that identify satire as a timely and effective genre for critically commenting on the state of academia because it reveals ethical dimensions that engage an ironic voice to negotiate issues of culture and identity. Included among the essays are the results of responses gathered from practicing authors in the genre of academic satire who provide commentary and insights exclusive to this collection.
