The book reconsiders Paul Ricoeur’s speculative research from the perspective of a critical hermeneutics understood as a general methodology which is able to work at an interdisciplinary level. The specialisation of sciences results in a differentiation of knowledge that determines advancement, while also provoking a great increase of complexity and fragmentation. As such, among the human sciences, some problematic disciplines, like psychoanalysis, sociology and history, have not yet found a unified methodological and epistemological structure. This book argues that critical hermeneutics may work as a mediatory inter-discipline in this regard.

Intertextuality, Intersubjectivity, and Narrative Identity presents recent findings and opens new vistas for research by mapping the potential interconnections of intertextuality and intersubjectivity across a range of fields. In recent years phenomenology has become a resource for reflecting on political questions. While much of this discussion has primarily focused on the ways in which phenomenology can help reformulate central concepts in political theory, the chapters in this volume ask in a methodological and systematic way how phenomenology can connect first-person experience with normative principles in political philosophy. The chapters are divided into three thematic sections. Part I covers the phenomenology of political experience. The chapters in this section focus on a variety of experiences that we come across in political practice. The chapters in Part II address the phenomenology of political ontology by examining the constitution of the realm of the political. Recent developments in cognitive narrative theory have called attention to readers' active participation in making sense of narrative. However, while most psychologically inspired models address interpreters' subpersonal (i.e., unconscious) responses, the experiential level of their engagement with narrative remains relatively undertheorized. Building on theories of experience and embodiment within today's "second-generation" cognitive science, and opening a dialogue with so-called "enactivist" philosophy, this book sets out to explore how narrative experiences arise from the interaction between textual cues and readers' past experiences. Caracciolo's study offers a phenomenologically inspired account of narrative, spanning a wide gamut of responses such as the embodied dynamic of imagining a fictional world, empathetic perspective-taking in relating to characters, and "higher-order" evaluations and interpretations. Only by placing a premium on how such modes of engagement are intertwined in experience, Caracciolo argues, can we do justice to narrative's psychological and existential impact on our lives. These insights are illustrated through close readings of literary texts ranging from Émile Zola's Germinal to José Saramago's Blindness.

Taking a unique approach which combines sociolinguistics with theoretical linguistics, this book presents a view of language and grammar as both a cognitive and socio-cultural phenomena. We as Self argues for a notion of we-ness based not on a self-centered or a self-less point of view, in which the “we” is only either a collection of individuals or an anonymous whole, but on “relation.” This relation is pre-subjective, meaning that the conscious, reflective, subjective self is not the conceptual basis of the relation. The irreducible metaphysical distinction between self and other is always there, but the awareness of it is not prior to this relation, which is an ontological pre-condition of self. Hye Young Kim demonstrates that the distinction and unity of self and other in this relation can be comprehended spatially by applying knot logic. The author analyzes certain linguistic practices in Korean to show one representation of pre-subjective we-ness in language, but not in an ethnographical manner. By doing so, the author criticizes and challenges the Eurocentric tendency of philosophy and contributes to efforts to expand diversity in philosophy.
