From Collective Beings To Quasi Systems

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book outlines a possible future theoretical perspective for systemics, its conceptual morphology and landscape while the Good-Old-Fashioned-Systemics (GOFS) era is still under way. The change from GOFS to future systemics can be represented, as shown in the book title, by the conceptual change from Collective Beings to Quasi-systems. With the current advancements, problems and approaches occurring in contemporary science, systemics are moving beyond the traditional frameworks used in the past. From Collective Beings to Coherent Quasi-Systems outlines a conceptual morphology and landscape for a new theoretical perspective for systemics introducing the concept of Quasi-systems. Advances in domains such as theoretical physics, philosophy of science, cell biology, neuroscience, experimental economics, network science and many others offer new concepts and technical tools to support the creation of a fully transdisciplinary General Theory of Change. This circumstance requires a deep reformulation of systemics, without forgetting the achievements of established conventions. The book is divided into two parts. Part I, examines classic systemic issues from new theoretical perspectives and approaches. A new general unified framework is introduced to help deal with topics such as dynamic structural coherence and Quasi-systems. This new theoretical framework is compared and contrasted with the traditional approaches. Part II focuses on the process of translation into social culture of the theoretical principles, models and approaches introduced in Part I. This translation is urgent in post-industrial societies where emergent processes and problems are still dealt with by using the classical or non-systemic knowledge of the industrial phase.

The Finite Element Method For Elliptic Problems

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The objective of this book is to analyze within reasonable limits (it is not a treatise) the basic mathematical aspects of the finite element method. The book should also serve as an introduction to current research on this subject. On the one hand, it is also intended to be a working textbook for advanced courses in Numerical Analysis, as typically taught in graduate courses in American and French universities. For example, it is the author's experience that a one-semester course (on a three-hour per week basis) can be taught from Chapters 1, 2 and 3 (with the exception of Section 3.3), while another one-semester course can be taught from Chapters 4 and 6. On the other hand, it is hoped that this book will prove to be useful for researchers interested in advanced aspects of the numerical analysis of the finite element method. In this respect, Section 3.3, Chapters 5, 7 and 8, and the sections on "Additional Bibliography and Comments should provide many suggestions for conducting seminars.

Fractional Order Processes

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The book presents efficient numerical methods for simulation and analysis of physical processes exhibiting fractional order (FO) dynamics. The book introduces FO system identification method to estimate parameters of a mathematical model under consideration from experimental or simulated data. A simple tuning technique, which aims to produce a robust FO PID controller exhibiting iso-damping property during re-parameterization of a plant, is devised in the book. A new numerical method to find an equivalent finite dimensional integer order system for an infinite dimensional FO system is developed in the book. The book also introduces a numerical method to solve FO optimal control problems. Key features Proposes generalized triangular function operational matrices. Shows significant applications of triangular orthogonal functions as well as triangular strip operational matrices in simulation, identification and control of fractional order processes. Provides numerical methods for simulation of physical problems involving different types of weakly singular integral equations, Abel’s integral equation, fractional order integro-differential equations, fractional order differential and differential-algebraic equations, and fractional order partial differential equations. Suggests alternative way to do numerical computation of fractional order signals and systems and control. Provides source codes developed in MATLAB for each chapter, allowing the interested reader to take advantage of these codes for broadening and enhancing the scope of the book itself and developing new results.

Recent Advances In Computational Optimization

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book presents recent advances in computational optimization. Our everyday life is unthinkable without optimization. We try to minimize our effort and to maximize the achieved profit. Many real-world and industrial problems arising in engineering, economics, medicine and other domains can be formulated as optimization tasks. The book is a comprehensive collection of extended contributions from the Workshops on Computational Optimization 2020. The book includes important real problems like modeling of physical processes, workforce planning, parameter settings for controlling different processes, transportation problems, wireless sensor networks, machine scheduling, air pollution modeling, solving multiple integrals and systems of differential equations which describe real processes, solving engineering problems. It shows how to develop algorithms for them based on new intelligent methods like evolutionary computations, ant colony optimization, constrain programming and others. This research demonstrates how some real-world problems arising in engineering, economics and other domains can be formulated as optimization problems.
