After The Pandemic

BOOK EXCERPT:

Many things define a job seeker--experience, education, first impressions, connections, passion, and the value you might bring to the company you wish to work for. For decades, the perceived ideal candidate would have all of the above, most of the above; however, a good candidate would have a four-year college degree. To a great extent, an employer still would like someone with a four-year college degree. However, I believe this is changing. The need for those who work with their hands and those who are willing to work their way up through the various levels of an organization is becoming more and more desired by companies. The time it will take you to earn your degree, you could be making a nice living and will have accrued zero debt in the process. Plus, after working in an industry of your choice, something you do have an interest in, even a passion for, you may be on equal footing with a newly hired college grad based on the four years you have been working in your industry of choice, as you continue to work your way up through the company. You will find the more value you bring to a company, the more they will look to you to assume great responsibility. Typically, the more responsibility, the greater the paycheck. What makes this book timely is the fact as COVID-19 winds down, we are seeing many labor shortages in many areas and industries. Now is the absolute best time to go to an industry experiencing a labor shortage, or enter one of the numerous industries researched in this book and get yourself the job you always wanted, without the cost and time involved with getting a four-year college education. I have nothing against getting a degree, and there are still many fields where they will always be mandatory; however, the trades, service industries, government, railroads, law enforcement, plus many others will welcome you with open arms without the need for a four-year degree. I hope this book helps.

Yet, as daunting as it is, some institutions have already made significant progress in the journey. In this book Santiago Iñiguez de Onzoño, President of IE University, and Peter Lorange, former President of IMD, bring together contributions from leading figures from some of the world’s major universities. Conflict Resolution After The Pandemic

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this edited volume, experts on conflict resolution examine the impact of the crises triggered by the coronavirus and official responses to it. The pandemic has clearly exacerbated existing social and political conflicts, but, as the book argues, its longer-term effects open the door to both further conflict escalation and dramatic new opportunities for building peace. In a series of short essays combining social analysis with informed speculation, the contributors examine the impact of the coronavirus crisis on a wide variety of issues, including nationality, social class, race, gender, ethnicity, and religion. They conclude that the period of the pandemic may well constitute a historic turning point, since the overall impact of the crisis is to destabilize existing social and political systems. Not only does this systemic shakeup produce the possibility of more intense and violent conflicts, but also presents new opportunities for advancing the related causes of social justice and civic peace. This book will be of great interest to students of peace studies, conflict resolution, public policy and International Relations.

Emerging European Economies After The Pandemic

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This edited volume examines the development path of eight Central and Eastern European countries with an overlapping historical background that joined the European Union between 2004 and 2013, and identifies the main similarities and differences between the countries concerned. Based on wide comparative data analysis of Bulgaria, Croatia, The Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia, each chapter in the volume provides detailed information about the state of the economy in a specific area preceding the pandemic shock. The book offers a detailed snapshot of the state of the different areas of the economy, starting from the time when the countries concerned came out of the 2008 financial crisis, up to the date when COVID-19 hit. Further, each chapter analyzes the effects of this unprecedented shock on a particular field, which is followed by highlighting the main problems the countries are facing at present and in the near future, together with identifying the available policy options. Finally, before concluding and making general and country-specific policy recommendations, some thoughts will be given to longer-term prospects. More specifically, the question of how the subject area could contribute to avoiding the "middle-income-trap" that this region may be facing will be addressed. The comprehensive approach makes this volume a must-read for scholars and students of economics, as well as policy decision-makers in Europe, interested in a better understanding of the region's economic development.

Economic Challenges For Europe After The Pandemic

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book focuses on the recovery and new normal in a post-Covid scenario, drawing important lessons from the pandemic and proposing new ideas for sustainable development, endogenous dynamism, and inclusive growth. The book presents different ideas and perspectives about the present and the future, reflecting on four main fields of our economic reality: macroeconomics, governments, technology, and society. It discusses important topics for future economic scenarios, beginning with an estimation of the economic consequences of the absence of an equitable distribution of vaccines. Further topics discussed include the government’s debts sustainability, the probability of an inflation/deflation or of a stagflation scenario, as well as the impact of US and European economic policies on economic growth. The book further investigates the economic costs of the pandemic, which have fallen most heavily on those least able to bear them. It examines governments subsidies, which supported people and firms through wage subsidies, unemployment benefits, and other fiscal measures, and discusses the question of whether more investment in health care, education, and other public services will still be needed. In a time of immense change and global challenges, this book is a must-read for scholars, researchers, and students of economics, as well as policy-makers interested in a better understanding of economic growth, energy, environment, migration, development, digital transformation, and demography.
