BOOK EXCERPT:

It would seem unlikely that one could discover tolerant religious attitudes in Spain, Portugal, and the New World colonies during the era of the Inquisition, when enforcement of Catholic orthodoxy was widespread and brutal. Yet this groundbreaking book does exactly that. Drawing on an enormous body of historical evidence—including records of the Inquisition itself—the historian Stuart Schwartz investigates the idea of religious tolerance and its evolution in the Hispanic world from 1500 to 1820. Focusing on the attitudes and beliefs of common people rather than those of intellectual elites, the author finds that no small segment of the population believed in freedom of conscience and rejected the exclusive validity of the Church. The book explores various sources of tolerant attitudes, the challenges that the New World presented to religious orthodoxy, the complex relations between “popular” and “learned” culture, and many related topics. The volume concludes with a discussion of the relativist ideas that were taking hold elsewhere in Europe during this era.

All We Can Save

BOOK EXCERPT:

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Provocative and illuminating essays from women at the forefront of the climate movement who are harnessing truth, courage, and solutions to lead humanity forward. “A powerful read that fills one with, dare I say . . . hope?”—The New York Times NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY SMITHSONIAN MAGAZINE There is a renaissance blooming in the climate movement: leadership that is more characteristically feminine and more faithfully feminist, rooted in compassion, connection, creativity, and collaboration. While it’s clear that women and girls are vital voices and agents of change for this planet, they are too often missing from the proverbial table. More than a problem of bias, it’s a dynamic that sets us up for failure. To change everything, we need everyone. All We Can Save illuminates the expertise and insights of dozens of diverse women leading on climate in the United States—scientists, journalists, farmers, lawyers, teachers, activists, innovators, wonks, and designers, across generations, geographies, and race—and aims to advance a more representative, nuanced, and solution-oriented public conversation on the climate crisis. These women offer a spectrum of ideas and insights for how we can rapidly, radically reshape society. Intermixing essays with poetry and art, this book is both a balm and a guide for knowing and holding what has been done to the world, while bolstering our resolve never to give up on one another or our collective future. We must summon truth, courage, and solutions to turn away from the brink and toward life-giving possibility. Curated by two climate leaders, the book is a collection and celebration of visionaries who are leading us on a path toward all we can save. The 11 Things Your Kids Should Know So They Can Save America

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Our country and our government have huge issues to deal with today. We have enormous debt, high unemployment, entitlement programs that are unsustainable, pornography, drug use, and skyrocketing divorce rates. We lack the honesty, integrity, and moral values of our forefathers. Our country isn't broken. People are broken. Author Steve White proposes a solution to these ever-increasing problems. In The 11 Things Your Kids Should Know (So They Can Save America), he discusses eleven important principles that should be the foundation of every child's upbringing. By focusing on these basic ideas that help young people form good moral compasses, White believes we can raise a generation that embodies the same values as the country's Founding Fathers, thereby bringing honesty, integrity, and moral values back to America. Some of the principles he discusses include teaching children to be nice, like themselves, make a difference, eat healthy and stay fit, never stop learning, and get to know God. Using real-life examples, White shows how we can equip today's children to make a difference, regain our value system, and save our nation.

Only The People Can Save The People

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Examines the egalitarian, creative, and inclusive practice of radical democracy in contemporary Venezuela. In a global historical moment of growing mobilizations against inequality, corruption, and exclusion, Only the People Can Save the People illustrates the necessity and challenges of more egalitarian approaches to collective life from one of the most tumultuous and compelling experiments in radical democracy. Donald V. Kingsbury examines twenty-first-century Venezuelan politics from the perspective of constituent power—the egalitarian, creative, and inclusive practice of radical democracy. In the aftermath of neoliberal structural adjustment, Venezuelan politics have been increasingly reconfigured according to principles of autogestión (self-management), social movement autonomy, protagonistic and participatory democracy, and anti-capitalism. However, inherited and intensifying challenges arising from Venezuela’s status as a petrostate, the class and racial divisions that define its society, and the difficulties of defining what Hugo Chávez termed “socialism for the twenty-first century” have resulted in a tumultuous process of social change. Informed by ethnography, contemporary and comparative political thought, and global political economy, Only the People Can Save the People demonstrates how constituent power is shaping collective identity, political conflict, and infrastructural space in contemporary Latin America. Donald V. Kingsbury is Lecturer in Political Science and Latin American Studies at the University of Toronto.

Paul The Teacher

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Who would have thought that the great teacher of the Word, Paul, started out as a persecutor of Christians? Arguably the most influential Christian missionary of the early times, Paul did not begin preaching the Word of God until after his life-changing experience at the road to Damascus, where Jesus appeared to him in great light, striking him blind. In Paul the Teacher, Vincent Etwaroo shows how the great light that struck Paul blind was also the light that opened his eyes to God's truth, how he emerged from the incident a new man with a new sight and new purpose, and how the Holy Spirit's constant guidance in his missionary journeys led him to transform the lives of many.
