An Unlikely Saint

BOOK EXCERPT:

Figuratively speaking this is a "rags to riches" story. It tells of a person who, in his youth, was a loner and an avowed atheist. He had no time for anyone but himself. He rebuffed all attempts by his neighbors to be friendly. He had a very peculiar habit later in life that was puzzling to the citizens of his town. Thrust upon him during his declining years by a "pushy" social worker was a baby whom he was expected to rear. Something happened on one occasion that changed him into another personality. From that point on not only was his personality changed but also his mode of life. Along the way many odd situations arise which captivate the attention of the reader, causing him or her to wonder what is going to happen next. The main character sees needs in his home town, needs to which no other citizen had given a thought. With the tenacity of a pit bull he tackles those needs. Figured in the plot of this book is a woman with the vocabulary of the proverbial sailor but who is a "diamond in the rough". This book is designed for enjoyable reading.

An Unlikely Union

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Doctor's Wounded Heart Union Army physician Evan Mackay runs his ward of the Baltimore military hospital with tremendous skill but no warmth. He will do his duty by the Confederate soldiers in his care, but sympathy and tenderness left him after the death of his brother, a Federal soldier. So why can't he stop himself from warming to his beautiful, compassionate, unapologetically Southern nurse? Two years of war have shown Emily Davis that the men on both sides of the war need all the comfort and care they can get. And that includes a stubborn, prickly Scottish doctor. As Evan opens his heart to Emily, she can only hope he'll let her fill it with forgiveness...and love..

In The Footsteps Of George Borrow

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

George Borrow - brilliant linguist, expert on gypsy culture and author of Wild Wales (1862) - remains an enigmatic character whose fiction and travel writing mix autobiography and invention. From 1835 to 1840, he worked as an agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society, attempting to distribute Protestant Testaments in fiercely Catholic Spain. The outcome of this controversial and risky enterprise is The Bible in Spain, an account of his wanderings published in 1843. In the Footsteps of George Borrow brings to life the scenery and culture of Spain as well as the complex personality of the man who described it in the 1830s. In the course of his travels, Guy Arnold considers Borrow's ambiguous religious beliefs, his avowed taste for the social lowlife and his mysterious liaison with a widow from Norfolk. He also compares modern Spain with that of Borrow's time and finds - civil war and brigandage apart - that much remains surprisingly the same.
