Aristotle S Researches In Natural Science Classic Reprint

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Excerpt from Aristotle's Researches in Natural Science Aristotle's researches in Natural Science are set forth in a series of his works, some of which have already received a great deal of attention, while the rest have been much neglected. Translations, with or without explanatory notes, of all these works have been produced in English, French, German, or Latin, and separate treatises or papers discussing Aristotle's researches in one or more branches of Natural Science have been published from time to time. Among such treatises and papers may be mentioned J. Muller's Uber den glatten Hai des Aristoteles, &c., Berlin, 1842, a folio volume with six plates, relating, in part, to the placental cartilaginous fishes of Aristotle; J. B. Meyer's Aristoteles Thierkunde, Ein Beitrag zur Geschichte der Zoologie, Physiologic, und alten Philosophic, Berlin, 1855; H. Aubert's Die Cephalopoden des Aristoteles, &c., Lepzig, 1862, 39 pp.; C. J. Sundevall's Die Thierarten des Aristoteles von den Klassen der Saugethiere, Vogel, Reptilien und Insekten, Stockholm, 1863; G. H. Lewes' Aristotle: A Chapter from the History of Science, London, 1864; and Dr. J. Young's paper "On the Malacostraca of Aristotle," published in The Annals and Magazine of Natural History, 1865. There are also several works and papers which incidentally give valuable assistance in the study of Aristotle's researches in Natural Science, e.g. Cuvier and Valenciennes' Histoire Naturelle des Poissons, Paris, 1828-49; J. L. Ideler's Meteorologia veterum Gr corum et Romanorum, Berlin, 1832; Spratt and Forbes' Travels in Lycia, &c., London, 1847; Hoffman and Jordan's "Catalogue of the Fishes of Greece, with Notes on the Names now in Use, and those Employed by Classical Authors," published in the Proceedings of the Academy of Sciences of Philadelphia, for 1892; D'A. W. Thompson's Glossary of Greek Birds, Oxford, 1895; and T. Gill's "Parental Care among Freshwater Fishes," published in the Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, 1906. Aristotle S Ethics And Legal Rhetoric

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Taking the novel position of dealing with law, classical rhetoric and feminism concurrently, this book considers the effects of beliefs about language on those who attempt to theorize about and use law to accomplish practical and political purposes. The author employs Aristotle's terminology to analyze economic and literary schools of thought in the US legal academy, noting the implicit language theory underlying claims by major thinkers in each school about the nature of law and its relationship to justice. The underlying assumption is that, as law can only work through language, beliefs about its relationship to justice are determined by assumptions about the nature of language. In addition, the author provides an alternative, feminist rhetoric that, being focused on the production of texts rather than their interpretation, offers a practical ethic of intervention.

The Natural Sciences And The Social Sciences

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Natural Sciences and the Social Sciences contains a series of explorations of the different ways in which the social sciences have interacted with the natural sciences. Usually, such interactions are considered to go only `one way': from the natural to the social sciences. But there are several important essays in this volume which show how developments in the social sciences have affected the natural sciences - even the `hard' science of physics. Other essays deal with various types of interaction since the Scientific Revolution. In his general introductory chapter, Cohen sets some general themes concerning analogies and homologies and the use of metaphors, drawing specific examples from the use of concepts of physics by marginalist economists and of developments in the life sciences by organismic sociologists. The remaining chapters, which explore the different ways in which the social sciences and the natural sciences have actually interacted, are written by leaders in the field of history of science, drawn from a wide range of countries and disciplines. The book will be of great interest to all historians of science, philosophers interested in questions of methodology, economists and sociologists, and all social scientists concerned with the history of their subject and its foundations.

Trust

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book presents cutting-edge concepts on the question of trust. Written by leading experts, it investigates a paradoxical feature of contemporary society: while information and communication technologies, on the one hand, and scientific discourses, on the other, can promote more informed participation in public and democratic life, they have also led to a dramatic decline in our communicative and cooperative skills. The book analyzes the notion of trust from an interdisciplinary perspective by combining the normative (continental) and empirical (Anglo-American) approaches and by considering the political, epistemological, and historical transformations in the interpersonal relationships sparked by new technologies. Using trust as a model, it then investigates and clarifies the new types of participation that are made possible by scientific and technological advances.

Alfonso S Rectifying The Curved

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This volume offers a new English translation, introduction, and detailed commentary on Sefer Meyasher 'Aqov, (The Rectifying of the Curved), a 14th-century Hebrew treatise on the foundation of geometry. The book is a mixture of two genres: philosophical discussion and formal, Euclidean-type geometrical writing. A central issue is the use of motion and superposition in geometry, which is analyzed in depth through dialog with earlier Arab mathematicians. The author, Alfonso, was identified by Gita Gluskina (the editor of the 1983 Russian edition) as Alfonso of Valladolid, the converted Jew Abner of Burgos. Alfonso lived in Castile, rather far from the leading cultural centers of his time, but nonetheless at the crossroad of three cultures. He was raised in the Jewish tradition and like many Sephardic Jewish intellectuals was versed in Greek-Arabic philosophy and science. He also had connections with some Christian nobles and towards the end of his life converted to Christianity. Driven by his ambition to solve the problem of the quadrature of the circle, as well as other open geometrical problems, Alfonso acquired surprisingly wide knowledge and became familiar with several episodes in Greek and Arabic geometry that historians usually consider not to have been known in the West in the fourteenth century. Sefer Meyasher 'Aqov reflects his wide and deep erudition in mathematics and philosophy, and provides new evidence on cultural transmission around the Mediterranean.

The Aristotelian Mirabilia And Early Peripatetic Natural Science

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This is the first volume devoted to the sections of the Aristotelian Mirabilia on natural science, filling a significant gap in the history of the Aristotelian study of nature and especially of animals. The chapters in this volume explore the Mirabilia, or De mirabilibus auscultationibus (On Marvelous Things Heard), and its engagement with the natural sciences. The first two chapters deliver an introduction to this work: one a discussion of the history of the text and the other a discussion of Aristotelian epistemology and methodology, and the role of the Mirabilia in that context. This is followed by eight chapters that, together, are effectively a commentary on those sections of the Mirabilia with close connections to Aristotle’s Historia animalium and to a number of Theophrastus’ scientific treatises. Finally, the volume ends with two chapters on thematic topics connected to natural science running throughout the work, namely color and disease. The Aristotelian Mirabilia and Early Peripatetic Natural Science should prove invaluable to scholars and students interested in the ancient Greek study of nature, ancient philosophy, and Aristotelian science in particular.
