TRB’s Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) Synthesis 23: Bird Harassment, Repellent, and Deterrent Techniques for Use on and Near Airports reviews techniques for reducing bird collisions with aircraft and the relative effectiveness of the various techniques.

ACRP Synthesis 39 provides direct wildlife population control techniques for reducing wildlife collisions with aircraft. In addition, the report summarizes the ecological foundation of wildlife population control and management. It is designed to supplement ACRP Synthesis 23: Bird Harassment, Repellent, and Deterrent Techniques for Use on and Near Airports. ACRP Synthesis 23 provides a synthesis of nonlethal wildlife control measures focusing on birds. The combined information from the two syntheses is designed to help airports develop an effective, integrated wildlife population control strategy and program.

Foreign Object Debris and Damage in Aviation discusses both biological and non-biological Foreign Object Debris (FOD) and associated Foreign Object Damage (FOD) in aviation. The book provides a comprehensive treatment of the wide spectrum of FOD with numerous cost, management, and wildlife considerations. In addition, the book provides management plans for wildlife, including positive and passive methods. This report discusses airport compatible land use requirements, the legal issues related to achieving airport compatible land use, and legal issues particular to eliminating hazardous obstructions to airspace. The report concludes by reviewing the major legal issues of concern in achieving airport-compatible land use. While general legal principles relevant to airport land use are well established, they are often applied on a case by case basis, particularly in the context of regulatory takings and inverse condemnation. This ad hoc analysis introduces, if not an element of unpredictability, at least some variation in the law by jurisdiction. The need for greater predictability highlights the significance of including airport zoning as part of comprehensive land use planning. This report should be helpful to airport administrators, attorneys, board members, financial officers, community members in the vicinity of airports, realtors, and city and county zoning officials.

Bird strikes are one of the most dangerous threats to civil and military flight safety: between 1960 and 2014, they were responsible for the destruction of approximately 150 civil aircraft and the deaths of 271 people. Bird Strike presents a summary of the damage imposed on the aviation industries by their avian counterparts.
