BOOK EXCERPT:

Excerpt from Book-Prices Current, Vol. 19: A Record of the Prices at Which Books Have Been Sold at Auction, From October, 1904, to July, 1905, Being the Season 1904-1905 Scott. - Waverley, 3 vol., boards, 1814 (another set in boards realised £131 on July lgth) William Blake. - Marriage of Heaven and Neil, 4to., morocco, n. D. In addition, twenty-six other works realised £100 or over, but less than £150, and on a calculation it is found that, including the before mentioned, the books contained in the second list given above, and the other works which it has not been thought necessary to quote, but which realised £100 and upwards, as much as was obtained for 69 works. No account is taken of manuscripts in this computation, and it is evident that, so far as the printed books are concerned, the average amount per work realised (the whole season's sales being computed) is very materially increased by the remarkable influx of expensive works to which reference has been made. BOOK EXCERPT:

Excerpt from Book-Prices Current, Vol. 3: A Record of the Prices at Which Books Have Been Sold at Auction, From December, 1888, to November, 1889 The number of sales by auction reported in this volume amounts to fifty-six, as against forty-nine reported in Vol. II, and seventy three in Vol. I, and although there is nothing very remarkable in any of these sales individually, yet in the aggregate the afford a bird's-eye view extending over the whole range of Eng ish litera ture. The same may be said, to some extent, of each of the other volumes of book-prices Current already issued, but a glance at the Index of this third volume discloses a larger assortment of books, and the absence of much of that monotonous recurrence which was especially noticeable in the other two. This may fairly be claimed as a distinct advantage, though it is subject to the. Usual exception with regard to the illustrated works of popular modern authors. These seem to be still increasing in number and in rice, though the amounts realised at the mansfield-mackenzie S e, in March last, for works of this class (post, p. 86 et seq.) were quite phenomenal. Beauty and a propriateness of binding, and excellence of condition, contribute alike to the realisation of the largest amounts ever paid for picture books of the kind. The same library was noticeable for the large number of theatrical works it contained many of these were of the greatest rarity, and in the finest condition. The Burnett Sale, in April (post, p. 153 et se was also remarkable, though toa less extent, for Similar reasons. The sale of the season was, however, undoubtedly that reported on. BOOK EXCERPT:

Excerpt from Book-Prices Current, Vol. 14: A Record of the Prices at Which Books Have Been Sold at Auction, From October, 1899, to July, 1900, Being the Season 1899-1900 Cavendish the third portion of the library of J. B. Inglis, a noted collector of the first half of the present century; and the Peel heirlooms, sold by Messrs. Robinson Fisher, on June 12th and following days. These were the most noticeable sales of last season, and though the whole of them, if massed together, would not approach the importance of a single Ashburnham or Syston Park collection, they were, nevertheless, of very great interest, on no account to be overlooked in any history that may be written hereafter of the state of the English book-market during the 19th century, now fast drawing to its close. BOOK EXCERPT:

Excerpt from Book-Prices Current, Vol. 20: A Record of the Prices at Which Books Have Been Sold at Auction, From October, 1905, to July, 1906, Being the Season 1905-1906 In addition, seventeen other works realised 100 or over, while many more are credited with very substantial amounts, though on the whole it cannot be said that these high-priced books are as numerous as they have been on recent occasions. In one respect the most important sale of the season was that held by Messrs. Sotheby on May 7th and following days, when the late Mr. Truman's fine collection of works illustrated by George Cruikshank, was brought to the hammer. The collection was also rich in caricatures and other prints attributed to the same artist. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. BOOK EXCERPT:

Excerpt from Book-Prices Current, Vol. 13: A Record of the Prices at Which Books Have Been Sold at Auction, From October, 1898, to July, 1899, Being the Season 1898 1899 The present volume of book-prices current is, strictly speak ing, the first that has accurately coincided with the natural course of the auction season, which, as is almost universally known, begins, as a rule, in the middle of October and ends at the end of July, or in the early days of August. It will be remembered that the previous volume was made to commence in December, 1897, a procedure absolutely necessary in order to introduce a new system. The present volume covers the sales held during the months of October, 1898, and July, 1899, inclusive, and I believe that it will be found that no sale or entry of any importance taking place between these dates has been omitted from its pages. Omissions there are, for it is neither desirable nor necessary to chronicle everything that is sold irrespective of condition, price, or interest; and then, again, some books have been purposely overlooked, for there is no satisfaction in repeating ad nausea: matters of in formation which have been dealt with in the same volume with a similar result on many previous occasions. Book-prices current is, and always has been, a work Of selection specially constructed for quick and easy reference, and compiled in such a' manner as to present as true and faithful a picture Of the book-market for the time being as possible without wearisome repetition on the one hand or irregular omission on the other.
