Divorce has become a form of family change in contemporary western societies, spawning much research to investigate its causes and consequences. Such research has promoted a sociological understanding of divorce, impact on families and individuals as well as implications for public policy. However, research in this domain has been largely restricted to white populations in western contexts as well as adhering to quantitative research methodologies. There is little understanding of the dynamics of minority ethnic families, sometimes resulting in false assumptions and over-generalizations about family structures, stability and transitions in these communities. The impact of this gap in knowledge leads to perspective blocks in terms of how minority ethnic families are conceived in the public sphere as well as in academia. Similar to other minority ethnic groups, there is little literature on divorce in South-Asian families. Though traditionally divorce rates within South-Asian communities were low, there is now an upward trend. This is the first book to analyze the experiences of British-Indian adult children of divorce and contextualize their experiences within the larger multi-cultural polity of the UK. It also discusses the value and implications of understanding the divorce phenomenon and how it is experienced within this community to present insights into what multi-cultural social work and knowledge can mean. This can also enhance support provision for all children and enable better coping of family transitions by acknowledging their specific contexts and needs.

Honour based violence and abuse manifests itself in different forms, and this book offers a comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon. This book argues that the limits of honour crimes must be defined more widely so that they include conducts and behaviours that originate from the patriarchal notion of honour, such as honour based oppression and breast ironing. The book provides a critical analysis and synthesis of the law in England and Wales and in the international human rights sphere. The relevant domestic legislation and cases are examined to reflect on whether adequate protection is provided for the victims and potential victims of honour based violence and abuse. Since honour based violence is a violation of human rights, the relevant international human rights law is examined to illustrate the perception of such crimes in the international arena. The effectiveness of any remedy for victims of honour based violence and abuse depends on its capability to change deep rooted behaviours in communities with honour based patriarchal values. This book argues that the law does not provide the effective impact required, in part due to patriarchal structures, and that more efforts should be dedicated to changes in education. Old men – especially those who live alone – remain an understudied group in the gerontological literature, despite their significance to the demographic development. Among the elderly, the proportion of old men living alone is rapidly rising. This book is an anthology of different perspectives on The Old Man. It contains a personal account of becoming an old man, treats ideas about the old man throughout Western cultural history, and presents the first studies on the very old man. It also discusses a wide variety of topics – including alcohol as a prism for male aging; the old man and sexuality, digitization, and masculinities; and the single old man as lonely or just living alone – paying much-needed attention to this long overlooked group. In the first study of the kind, Susan Blackburn examines how Indonesian women have engaged with the state since they began to organise a century ago. Voices from the women's movement resound in these pages, posing demands such as education for girls and reform of marriage laws. The state, for its part, is shown attempting to control women.
