The Gospel of Luke may be very familiar to you. You have probably heard the Nativity story every Christmas since your childhood. Most of what we learn and cherish about the infancy and childhood of Jesus comes from Luke, probably through his research and interviews with the Blessed Mother Mary. Most people, even non-Christians, recognize the parable of the Prodigal Son. There is so much more! The Gospel of Luke begins and ends in the temple. The Blessed Trinity emerges clearly. G. Campbell Morgan (1863-1945) was a leading Bible expositor in England and the United States. Despite a lack of substantial formal training, Morgan was a prolific writer and teacher. Ordained into the Congregational ministry, he was the pastor of Westminster Chapel, London (1904-17 and 1933-45). Morgan also conducted two very successful teaching tours in the United States, including work with D.L. Moody's ministry.

The Gospel of Luke was written, says its author, as an historical account of the ministry of Jesus. Not only would it serve as the basis for a sound faith on the part of professing Christians, but it would also claim a place for Christianity in history. Christ's ministry, as Luke shows, is realized prophecy; it is that time during which God's promise of salvation was fulfilled. His teachings, healing, and acts of compassion are all part of the good news. In Luke's Gospel, Christ's message of salvation is directed to the weak, poor, and needy, with an emphasis on the importance of self-denial and of whole-hearted discipleship. Thus, while Luke is the most conscious historian of the Gospel writers, his history is a vehicle of theological interpretation in which the significance of Jesus is expressed. In this commentary I. Howard Marshall calls attention to the theological message of Luke the Evangelist. His primary purpose is to exegete the text as it was written by Luke, so that the distinctiveness of Luke's Gospel may be seen. Basing his commentary on the third edition of The Greek New Testament, Dr. Marshall also refers to many variant readings which are significant in this study. He provides fairly full information on the meanings of the Greek words used by Luke and shows which words and constructions occur frequently and are therefore characteristic of his style. It is by this meticulous analysis of the Greek that Luke's theological intentions can be objectively determined.

This handbook, like others in this series, concentrates on exegetical matters that are of prime importance for translators, and it attempts to indicate possible solutions for translational problems that may arise because of language or culture. In this respect the Handbook attempts to deal with the full range of information important to translators. However, the authors do not attempt to provide help that other theologians and scholars may be seeking but which is not directly useful for the task of translating. It is assumed that such information is available elsewhere.

John was born in Haarlem, The Netherlands in 1930. He suffered starvation during Nazi occupation of Holland during World War II. His father was imprisoned by the Nazi's for six weeks for supplying the ten Boom family with ration cards, though they never found this out. John felt the call to ministry, went to Bible School in Brussels, Belgium, and met and married his wife there. They both felt a strong call to the mission field then Dutch New Guinea (later Irian Jaya - Indonesia) and left for the mission field (with The Christian & Missionary Alliance) (we went out under the US mission) shortly after their marriage. They would spend the next thirty-eight years on the mission field there before retiring to Toccoa, GA in 1995. The Lord blessed them with four children and 17 grandchildren! During his time on the mission field, John started, taught, and ran a Bible School in Irian Jaya.
