This guide contains the lessons that all HIV and AIDS counsellors in Africa need to know.It emphasis that counsellors to understand HIV as a condition that has medical, emotional, social and spiritual aspects, and to use this understanding to organise their resonses to clients.

This report presents eight case studies of HIV/AIDS programmes in Africa, Asia and Latin America. These studies reflect the concern that experiences and lessons learned from local small-scale best practice should be translated into bigger projects with wider coverage to help improve the quality of life of people living with or affected by HIV/AIDS. The studies are based on a presentation given at an international conference held in Paris in 1999, and cover projects in Cambodia, Cãte d'Ivoire, Ecuador, India, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda.

This publication carefully describes the HIV/AIDS pandemic and how it is understood in some African contexts, which hampers prevention initiatives. It also delineates the complex nature of the poverty and HIV/AIDS interplay. To address the situation, a family systems practical ecclesiological theology and approach to HIV/AIDS ministry, and a pastoral counselling approach that derives from and is sensitive to the African context, are proposed.

This document provides guidance on monitoring and evaluating the various aspects of voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) programs for HIV/AIDS.
