Ten years ago commercial implementation of the algorithms being developed was not realistic, allowing theoreticians to limit their focus to very specific areas. The NSF Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR) was formed in the Computer Science Department of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in 1992.
