During the last thirty years, the field of translation has exploded with multiple new theories. This case study of the translation of contemporary German literature in Britain and France seeks to address the philosophical and anthropological problem of otherness and to discover its significance for translation theory. This work should appeal to scholars interested in German, British, and French literature, translation theory, philosophy and sociology. central component of the translation process. Moreover, via disciplines, such as philosophy and anthropology, otherness in the last two decades has entered Western theories and studies of translation and become an important analytical and normative category in the field of translation studies. Nevertheless, there is an apparent lack of research considering the concept itself as well as its history and current use in the field and its relevance for the practice of translation. the translation theories currently known as 'foreignizing' and shows that some of these draw on the same nationalist agenda that they try to transcend. Moreover, the ensuing case study proves that current translation practice is still governed by a nationalist assurance of linguistic and cultural differences. This book therefore concludes by calling for a change of perspective in the theoretical and practical approaches to translation. Translation should no longer be regarded as a means of delimiting our selves from a national other, but as a way to uncover the otherness underlying these alleged selves.

A volume of selected, annotated references arranged under specific headings to provide a non-partisan guide to teachers involved in designing courses in translation and/or interpreting.

Periplus means 'the action of sailing round, a circumnavigation; a voyage (or journey) round a coastline, etc.'; in The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, a first-century account that describes coastal routes from Egypt to India and along East Africa, it is 'a narrative of such a voyage' (OED). Periplus: Poetry in Translation attempts to do both. It sails round or along certain coastlines, some of which might be unfamiliar, and whenever possible it narrates what occurred or did not occur on the journey. A degree of randomness is inevitable in a volume not restricted to any one period or country, and the translation voyages undertaken here range widely. A. K. Ramanujan reworks, from existing materials, the poems of the fourteenth-century Kashmiri saint-poet Lalla; Weissbort and Musial collaborate to bring over into English the experiment at work of the late Polish poet Miron Bialoszewski; there is a Korean shaman song; Arun Kolatkar's Marathi poems are translated by himself in response to various reading invitations and are gathered here for the first time. In the Introduction to Modern Poetry in Translation: 1983 (MPT), Ted Hughes, looking back on 'the unique tidal wave of poetry translation that swept through English (and through the other chief Western languages) in the sixties and the early seventies', said that many of the translations done at the time now form 'a great series of naturalized poetic monuments'. That tidal wave, at whose crest stood poets like Miroslav Holub, Zbigniew Herbert, Vasko Popa, Janos Pilinszky, and Yehuda Amichai, was a wholly European affair. Periplus, like MPT, features European poets, but at the same time explores an area hitherto neglected: the versetraditions of the Indian subcontinent. Almost a century into the age of translation, perhaps it is time to see if we cannot have a new balance of poetic power.

This volume makes a very particular contribution to current thinking on Anglo-continental literary relations in the sixteenth century. Maintaining a breadth and balance of concerns and approaches, Travels and Translations in the Sixteenth Century represents the academic throughout Europe: essays are contributed by scholars working in Hungary, Greece, Italy, and France, as well as in the UK. Arthur Kinney's introduction to the collection provides a North American overview of what is perhaps a uniquely comprehensive index to contemporary European criticism and scholarship in the area of early modern travel and translation. The essays collected here address the full range of traditional and contemporary issues, providing new light on canonical authors from More to Shakespeare, and also directing critical attention to many unfamiliar texts which need to be better known for our fuller understanding of sixteenth-century English literature.

Fictions of Hybridity is the first full-length study of the famous and infamous Danish translator Mogens Boisen's translations of James Joyce's Ulysses. It is author Ida Klitg��� rd's basic presumption that since Joyce's international outlook was that of a multilingual exile, and since the style of his major works clearly demonstrates a fundamentally foreignizing principle of linguistic, aesthetic, and cultural hybridity, his works are shaped according to, what Klitg��� rd calls, a poetics of translation as exile. This is very much the case in Ulysses. Consequently, translators of the novel are to take this stylistic trait into account when reproducing it in their own language. In this study, Klitg��� rd explores such hybridity in Boisen's translations. Based on a critical discussion of recent theories of translation, such as the concepts of 'domestication' and 'foreignization, ' she undertakes an extensive comparative analysis and evaluation of a number of episodes in Ulysses while paying close attention to the complex networks of the novel's most important stylistic features of hybridity.
