This book illustrates how feminist knowledge and postcolonial knowledge are marginalized in universities due to policies, organizational structures, and knowledge hierarchies that privilege metrics as measures of success and narrow views of science and research. The changing relationship between the state and knowledge production is a critical issue for universities and governments when disinformation is creating a crisis in expertise and trust in democratic institutions. Yet academic autonomy is being undermined by processes of corporatization of the university: managerialism, marketisation, technologization and privatization. Epistemic injustice occurs when particular knowledges are privileged due to policy priorities, metrics and organizational practices as these are underpinned by unequal power relations that inform who does what research and with whom. In turn, injustice occurs when knowledge is evaluated primarily on the basis of its usefulness. The chapters in this book illustrate the epistemic implications of changing institutional and organizational conditions produced by narrow conceptions of ‘knowledge’ and ‘good science’ and relations between them. It explores these arrangements at the level of colonial and geopolitical relations, and their effects in terms of institutional processes, practices, and agency. The text shows how a lack of epistemic diversity reinforces structural and cultural racial and gender injustices arising from colonialism, patriarchy, and dominant views of science. This volume will appeal to policy makers and researchers in higher education reform and scholars interested in changing academic practices from feminist and postcolonial perspectives. Epistemic injustice was conceptualized by Fricker as a form of social injustice, which occurs when people’s authority ‘as a knower’ is ignored, dismissed, or marginalized. It is attracting increasing interest in the mental health field because of the asymmetries of power between people using mental health services and mental health professionals. People experiencing mental health distress are particularly vulnerable to epistemic injustice as a consequence of deeply embedded social stigma, negative stereotyping, and assumed irrationality. This is amplified by other forms of stereotyping or structural discrimination, including racism, misogyny, and homophobia. Consequently, individual testimonies may be discounted as both irrational and unreliable. Epistemic injustice also operates systemically reflecting social and demographic characteristics, such a race, gender, sexuality or disability, or age.

"In a post-factual world in which claims are often held to be true only to the extent that they partisanly confirm one's preexisting beliefs, this book asks the following crucial questions: How can one identify the many forms of untruthfulness in discourse? How can one know when their use is ethically wrong? How can one judge untruthfulness in the messiness of situated discourse? Drawing on pragmatics, philosophy, psychology, and law, All Bullshit and Lies? develops a comprehensive framework for analyzing untruthful discourse in situated context. The TRUST (Trust-Related Untruthfulness in Situated Text) framework sees untruthfulness as encompassing not just deliberate manipulations of what you believe to be the truth (the insincerity of withholding, misleading, and lying), but also the distortions that arise pathologically from an irresponsible attitude toward the truth (dogma, distortion, and bullshit). Truth is often not "in play" (as in jokes or fiction), or concealing it can achieve a greater good (as in saving another's face). Untruthfulness becomes unethical in discourse, though, when it unjustifiably breaches the trust an interlocutor invests in the speaker. In such cases, the speaker becomes willfully insincere or epistemically negligent and thus culpable to a greater or lesser degree.
