BOOK EXCERPT:

"Although many literary critics assert that the Catholic novel is in decline, Aiming at Heaven, Getting the Earth: The English Catholic Novel Today argues that there is still vitality in the English Catholic novel at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Marian Crowe relates this fiction to recent developments in the post-Vatican II Church and elucidates intriguing possibilities for future Catholic fiction. In addition to discussing the theory and history of the Catholic novel, the book provides an in-depth study of four contemporary English Catholic novelists."--BOOK JACKET.

Homosexualism Versus Catholicism

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The author, David Carlin, begins this book with a distinction between homosexuality (same-sex attraction or behavior) and homosexualism (the ideology of the gay movement). He says that homosexuality is no danger to Catholicism, but that the ideology of homosexualism is a very grave danger. Moreover, homosexualism is part and parcel of an even larger philosophical danger, which Carlin calls moral liberalism, according to which we are free to do anything we wish provided we don’t hurt others in an obvious and tangible way. This ethical theory is profoundly at odds with the Catholic ethical ideal, especially its sexual ideal. What’s more, moral liberalism is a kind of practical atheism. And thus the ideology of homosexualism turns out to be part of the atheistic “culture war” against Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. Carlin contends that if Catholics are to safeguard their religion they must understand—and fi ght back against—the homosexualist ideology.

Special Providence

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

"God has a special providence for fools, drunks and the United States of America."--Otto von Bismarck America's response to the September 11 attacks spotlighted many of the country's longstanding goals on the world stage: to protect liberty at home, to secure America's economic interests, to spread democracy in totalitarian regimes and to vanquish the enemy utterly. One of America's leading foreign policy thinkers, Walter Russell Mead, argues that these diverse, conflicting impulses have in fact been the key to the U.S.'s success in the world. In a sweeping new synthesis, Mead uncovers four distinct historical patterns in foreign policy, each exemplified by a towering figure from our past. Wilsonians are moral missionaries, making the world safe for democracy by creating international watchdogs like the U.N. Hamiltonians likewise support international engagement, but their goal is to open foreign markets and expand the economy. Populist Jacksonians support a strong military, one that should be used rarely, but then with overwhelming force to bring the enemy to its knees. Jeffersonians, concerned primarily with liberty at home, are suspicious of both big military and large-scale international projects. A striking new vision of America's place in the world, Special Providence transcends stale debates about realists vs. idealists and hawks vs. doves to provide a revolutionary, nuanced, historically-grounded view of American foreign policy.
