BOOK EXCERPT:
Energy metabolism is central to life and altered energy expenditure (EE) is often cited as a central mechanism responsible for development of the obese phenotype. Resting EE, EE of physical activity, cold induced thermogenesis and thermic effect of feeding add to produce total EE but can also affect each other. It is thus very important that each component be well measured. Measuring energy expenditure by indirect calorimetry is extremely simple in theory but the practice if far more difficult. Taking into account temperature in small sized animals, measuring accurately the effect of activity on EE, correcting EE for body size body composition, age sex etc… add difficulties in producing reliable data. The goal of this Research Topic was to call for the practical experience of main investigators trained to practice calorimetry in order to get their feedback and the way they deal with the various and specific problems of humans and animal calorimetry. The goal is to share the questions/solutions experienced by the contributors to inititate a “guide of the good practices” that can be periodically updated and used by all those who are and will be interested in measuring energy metabolism from the 20g mouse to the human and large farm animals.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Studies in the Agricultural and Food Sciences: Energy Metabolism is a compilation of works on the energy metabolism in animals, especially animals of agricultural importance. The book is written by authoritative workers in the field and is divided into six parts; each chapter is based on a selected paper presented at the Eighth Symposium on Energy Metabolism held at Cambridge in September 1979. The text discusses feed evaluation; use of energy for maintenance and growth; and simulation models for energy exchange and growth. The book also covers the comparative aspects of energy metabolism; use of energy in production and lactation; and metabolic responses in the growing animal. The monograph is recommended for those who plan to study about energy metabolism of farm animals and its relationship with certain biological processes. The book will also appeal to those who develop feeds and methods that can help improve energy metabolism of farm animals.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The prevalence of obesity in developed countries is fast becoming a health issue on par with infectious diseases and malnutrition. Research in this area has grown substantially and includes the neurochemical pathways of the hypothalamus and its role in regulating energy expenditures in the body. This volume in the Progress in Brain Research series examines the emerging role of the hypothalamus as a crucial link between the sensing of nutrients and the control of insulin sensitivity, glucose uptake, and glucose production, the integrative role of the hypothalamus in thyroid and bone metabolism, the interaction between circadian information and energy metabolism, and the important interplay between the immune system and energy metabolism.· All contributors are recognized experts in their respective specialities· Provides expanded coverage of hypothalamic mechanisms involved in energy metabolism· Includes many outstanding full-colour illustrations· Contains special sections on circadian rhythms, immune system, thyroid and bone metabolism

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Twelfth Annual Midwest Conference on Endocrinology and Metabolism continued the tradition of selecting a topic of inter est to a wide variety of scientists with interests in biology. The conference an "Hormones and Energy Metabolism" was dedicated appro priately to Dr. Samuel A. Brody, a leader in research in this field as described by Professor Johnson in this volume. A particular feature of these conferences has been the large proportion of time devoted to discussion of each paper and the pub lished proceedings have included edited transcripts of these dis cussions. Unfortunately, due to malfunction of the recording sys tem, major portians of the discussions were lost and, despite much effort, insufficient was salvageable tobe meaningful and helpful. Consequently, the editors decided to omit completely the discus sions except for a communication provided by Dr. Woodside. We again express our appreciation to the staff of Conferences and Short Courses, University of r~issouri-Columbia Extension Divi sion and especially to Dr. John Swanson who helped organize the multitude of administrative details; to ~lrs. Linda Bennett, CPS, for her continuing excellent efforts in typing the manuscripts for publication; and particularly to the sponsors, without whom there would have been no conference. Ralph R. BOOK EXCERPT:
Abstract: This book discusses the factors which affect the heat produced by animals and man and the ways in which the energy of the organic components of their diets are used to support growth and reproduction. The general thermodynamic principles are considered in addition to the physical principles related to heat loss by radiation, convection, conduction and evaporation of water. Major parts of the book deal with the minimal or basal production of heat, with the heat produced during muscular work and as a result of physiological reactions to the climatic environment. The test is intended for undergraduates and postgraduates who are studying energy metabolism in the context of zoology, agriculture, ecology, or medicine.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In recent years, there has been rapid growth in knowledge pertaining to the nervous system. This has, in some measure, been due to the development and application of a number of techniques such as the 2-deoxyglucose method and microchemical methods for measuring metabolites and regional cerebral blood flow. Data from the application of these techniques are just beginning to be collected, and the next few years promise to bring many new and exciting findings. The study of energy metabolism in brain is particularly interesting due to the fact that although the brain has scant energy reserves (as compared with the liver), it has one of the highest metabolic rates in the body. Recent studies from several laboratories have shown a surprising divergence of re sponses to metabolic insult in different areas of brain. In this regard, the cer ebellum, for example, may have metabolic features which are uniqve from those of any other region. The high-energy phosphate compounds ATP and phos phocreatine, supplied by the oxidative metabolism of glucose, are necessary for normal cerebral functions such as the maintenance of membrane potentials, transmission of impulses, and synthetic processes. Interruption of substrate or "poisoning" of the system by a variety of means lead to a rapid change in cellular energetics, and ultimately cell death. From the clinical standpoint, an interesting feature of metabolic encephalopathy is that in many cases, early diagnosis and treatment may result in a rapid reversal of symptoms.
