The aim of the 6th International Fatigue Congress, besides covering the entire field of fatigue, was to promote the intimate connection between basic science and engineering application by the selection of appropriate session topics.Fatigue is the main cause of failure of engineering structures and components. Making reliable fatigue predictions is highly difficult because knowledge about fatigue mechanisms in all stages of the fatigue process must be developed much further. In addition, the decreasing availability of raw materials and energy resources forces engineers to continually reduce the weight of constructions. This congress presents research results also particularly for new materials, including composites. Researchers, on the other hand, are confronted with the engineering demands. Futhermore, the overwhelming development which is presently taking place in the field of computer software and hardware dealing with fatigue problems is outlined along with the directions of future developments in all areas of fatigue.Close to 300 fully peer-reviewed papers are published in the proceedings, including nearly 30 overview and keynote papers covering the various session topics. The proceedings should therefore serve as a comprehensive review of the fatigue field at the present state-of-the-art, suitable for scientists, engineers and students.

AEPA '96 provides a forum for discussion on the state-of-art developments in plasticity. Anemphasis is placed on the close interaction of the theories from macroplasticity,mesoplasticity and microplasticity together with their applications in various engineeringdisciplines such as solid mechanics, metal forming, structural analysis, geo-mechanics andmicromechanics. These proceedings include over 140 papers from the conference includingcase studies showing applications of plasticity in inter-disciplinary or nonconventional areas.

With an emphasis on aircraft materials, this book describes techniques for the material characterization to detect and quantify degradation processes such as corrosion and fatigue. It introduces readers to these techniques based on x-ray, ultrasonic, optical and thermal principles and demonstrates the potential of the techniques for a wide variety of applications concerning aircraft materials, especially aluminum and titanium alloys. The advantages and disadvantages of various techniques are evaluated.

This volume represents the latest issue of a collection of Proceedings each dealing with a different topic in Tribology. This volume contains the Proceedings from the 23rd Leeds-Lyon Symposium which addressed the topic of Elastohydrodynamics and was attended by many international experts in the field.The Keynote Address was presented by Professor Stathis Ioannides on the subject of "Tribology in Rolling Element Bearings" and was followed by fifteen other sessions covering a wide variety of general areas from "Experimental" to "Lubricant Properties". In addition, nine other invited technical papers were presented to support the sessions.

These two volumes of proceedings contain 11 invited keynote papers and 172 contributed papers presented at the International Conference on Advances in Steel Structures held on 11-14 December 1996 in Hong Kong. The papers cover a wide spectrum of topics and have been contributed from over 20 countries around the world. The conference, the first ever of its kind in Hong Kong, provided a forum for discussion and dissemination by researchers and designers of recent advances in the analysis, behaviour, design and construction of steel structures.The papers in the proceedings report the current state-of-the-art and point to the future directions of structural steel research. Volume I contains 93 papers on the analysis, behaviour, design and construction of framed structures and bridges, with 90 papers in Volume II dealing with plates, shells, analysis, optimization and computer applications, dynamics and seismic design, fatigue, and soil-structure interaction.

Since the early 1960s, coupled instabilities — also called compound buckling, simultaneous buckling or interactive buckling — have been a topic that was studied by many researchers. However, despite some excellent theoretical works in this field, the relevant subject is not yet satisfactorily considered in modern design codes for metal structures. To fill up this gap and to improve the current situation, a series of International Conferences 'Coupled Instabilities in Metal Structures' was launched in 1992 with the main aim of encouraging an exchange of views between researchers and engineers on the various aspects of coupled instabilities. The success of the first conference, held at Timisoara (Romania) in 1992, and organized by Professors D Dubina & V Gioncu (Politechnica University of Timisoara) and J Rondal (Univ. of Liège), has encouraged the organization of a second conference, to be held in Liège (Belgium) during September 5-7, 1996. A third conference is still forecast for the year 2000.

The Composite Materials Handbook, referred to by industry groups as CMH-17, is a six-volume engineering reference tool that contains over 1,000 records of the latest test data for polymer matrix, metal matrix, ceramic matrix, and structural sandwich composites. CMH-17 provides information and guidance necessary to design and fabricate end items from composite materials. It includes properties of composite materials that meet specific data requirements as well as guidelines for design, analysis, material selection, manufacturing, quality control, and repair. The primary purpose of the handbook is to standardize engineering methodologies related to testing, data reduction, and reporting of property data for current and emerging composite materials. It is used by engineers worldwide in designing and fabricating products made from composite materials.
