BOOK EXCERPT:
At the end of the 9th century, the large bearded warriors disembarked on the shores of the northern lake of Ladoga at 61:00N and 31:30E. The Viking warriors came from Sweden on the invitation by the aboriginals, asking, Come and rule us and bring the order and peace to our land. The order came indeed. The Viking sword subdued the fighting factions in a short time, and Kievan Rus Empire was established with its capital city Kiev on the high hills of the Dnieper River. The peace was short and turned into the almost unstoppable internecine warfare of the ruling princes, inhabitants and everybody against anybody. The local tribal culture had just one dimension a war. Kievan Empire was sundered in two pieces. The southeast became Ukraine and the northeast became Russia, which name was borrowed from the first warriors-settles of Sweden, called Ros-Rus. Ukraine moved towards more peaceful life, while Russia continued its aggressive faculties for many centuries. The coming grand princes and then the tsars embarked on their militaristic agenda, invading, taking the territories and subduing the nations and peoples all around. The largest empire of the world has been being built. In the 19th century, it extended from Western Europe to the Pacific Ocean, for 11,000km and from the Asian desert to the Icy Ocean for 5,000km. And a very modest addition to the Empire was Alaska (sold to USA in 1867.) The Russian tsars had disappeared in the 20th century, but not the Russian imperialism.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In 1928, the bodies of two young boys were found in the Indiana Harbor shipping canal of East Chicago, their identities unknown. With no missing children of their age and appearance reported in the city, the police had begun to lose hope until a breakthrough led them to the murderer: their father, George Chisholm, a Canadian World War I veteran. How could a parent commit such a crime? The case drew headlines around the country and worldwide. The death penalty loomed for Chisholm, and his attorneys planned a campaign to save him from the electric chair on the grounds of mental illness. During World War I, while serving in the Victoria Rifles of Canada for three years, Chisholm endured the horrors of trench warfare and the Battle of Vimy Ridge. After being gassed and shell-shocked on the battlefield, Chisholm returned to Canada a changed man and his mental health deteriorated. Although the war had produced epidemic levels of shell shock, it had often been viewed as “cowardice” or “nervousness,” rather than debilitating psychological trauma. And yet, its effects persisted long afterward, manifested in shocking cases like Chisholm’s. Set near Chicago during the roaring twenties—the era of Capone and Lindbergh, bootlegging, gangsters, and rapid social change—Fiendish Crime explores not only George Chisholm’s case, but also the legacy of tragedy that continues long after war.

BOOK EXCERPT:
New York City, November 25, 1864. Confederate officers attempt to destroy the city with a series of lethal fires that will forever diminish it to a mere speck of an island. What fueled these Southern patriots' rage? And what if they had succeeded? This terrifying scenario almost became a reality following what the New York Herald declared "a vast and fiendish plot." Infuriated by the Union's killing of their beloved General John Hunt Morgan and the burning of the Shenandoah Valley, eight Confederate officers swore revenge. Their method: Greek fire. Their target: Manhattan's commercial district. The daring mission could have changed the course of American history. In the first book to bring to life this bold conspiracy in full detail, Civil War expert Clint Johnson reveals shocking facts about the treacherous alliances and rivalries that threatened nineteenth-century America. Here is the truth about this stunning event, the spirit that fueled it, and the near destruction of the world's most influential city. "A fresh and intriguing addition to Civil War literature. . .. Johnson dispels myths and shows how Southerners sought to take revenge on a 'sister city' they felt betrayed them." --Brion McClanahan, author of The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Founding Fathers "Insightful analysis of an amazing turn of events that nearly set New York City ablaze during the Civil War." -- David J. Eicher, author of The Longest Night

BOOK EXCERPT:
Archangel Reyla is a low-key Archangel enjoying a quiet afterlife of slaying shadowlings, granting human wishes... and crocheting. Out of the blue, she gets a text from Archangel Gabriel, who she's never met before. Because of her high rating and aptitude for fighting (Reyla's great with a bow), she's being scouted as a possible member of The Echelon, an elite group of Archangels who are privy to the afterlife's secrets. Archangel Gabriel will be in charge of training Reyla, as well as another Echelon candidate named Mikah. Gabriel makes her nervous, and Mikah is critical of her in a way that's highly frustrating. Not only that, she doesn't want the extra attention! Still, Reyla decides to undergo the special training to sate her curiosity. After all, what's the worst that could happen? School for Spirits: Loneliest Archangel features a more adult set of characters, while retaining the spirit (pun intended) of the series. Content warning: Mentions of suicide, sexual assault

BOOK EXCERPT:
Ah, home sweet home... or so I thought. Not long after I return to my hometown, I get an eviction notice pinned to my door. No, this isn't an eviction, it's a deportation. By the queen's orders, half-orcs are no longer welcome in the city. That includes me. I'm forced to leave my pub and go “questing,” for lack of a better word. And because pretty Ed Muskin still owes me a favor, he's coming with me. What kind of trouble are we going to get into now, I wonder?
