BOOK EXCERPT:
The Commonwealth Secretariat has been a pioneer in promoting women’s rights and gender equality since the 1976–85 UN Decade for Women, and of gender mainstreaming since the UN 4th World Conference on Women, to which our 1995 Plan of Action on Gender and Development was a Commonwealth contribution. This publication brings together case studies prepared in connection with the end-of-term review of the 2005–15 Commonwealth Plan of Action for Gender Equality. The case studies are based on submissions and interviews with government representatives, gender specialists and other stakeholders, including civil society organisations, from 20 countries representing all regions of the Commonwealth. The examples were selected to demonstrate a range of strategies that can be employed to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment. Together they help to show what perpetuates gender inequality and offer approaches that can be adopted to help end unjust discrimination.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This report delivers the first systematic analysis of available data to make an authoritative statement on the status of inequality in HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria. Monitoring inequalities in HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria (in terms of burden, prevention and treatment) helps to pinpoint where there may be gaps and identify population groups that are being left behind, and support countries and international organizations to tailor policies, programmes, and service provision to close these gaps. The objectives of the report are to: assess the latest status and change of inequality in HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis globally; identify good-performing countries in terms of equity as well as countries that have room for improvement; and investigate the association of inequality with inequality in other health topics, social determinants of health and access to health facilities. This report supports Output 4.1.2 of GPW 13 (GPW 13 impacts and outcomes, global and regional health trends, Sustainable Development Goal indicators, health inequalities and disaggregated data monitored). Similar analysis have been previously conducted and published for other disease topics, including State of inequality: Childhood immunization and State of inequality: Reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This comparative volume examines the ways in which current controversies and political, legal, and social struggles for gender equality raise conceptual questions and challenge our thinking on political theories of equality, citizenship and human rights. Bringing together scholars and activists who reflect upon challenges to gender equality, citizenship, and human rights in their respective societies; it combines theoretical insights with empirically grounded studies. The volume contextualises feminist political theory in China and the Nordic countries and subsequently puts it into a global perspective. It tackles a complex set of tensions across a dense and shifting landscape and addresses issues including labour, health, democracy, homosexuality, migration and racism. By cutting across geographical and disciplinary boundaries, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of comparative politics, gender studies, human rights and also those interested in Scandinavian and Asian politics.
