BOOK EXCERPT:

In the early 1900s, southwest Missouri, also known as the Ozarks, quickly became a golfer's retreat. Professionals such as Walter Hagen and the legendary gambler Titanic Thompson toured the area and tested their skills against locals Horton Smith, Ky Laffoon, and others. Over the years, tour professionals including Hale Irwin, Payne Stewart, and Cathy Reynolds developed their games on the Ozark fairways. Today southwest Missouri can proudly claim the winners of five U.S. Opens, three Masters, one PGA Championship, and well over 100 professional tournaments. Golf in the Ozarks will take readers on a tour of "everything golf" in the region, from course and player histories to local tournaments.

Osage Beach

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In 1886, the railroad-tie industry spawned the village of Zebra at the confluence of the Osage and Grand Glaize Rivers in the Ozark region of south central Missouri. Forty-five years later, when the Lake of the Ozarks was created by the construction of Bagnell Dam, the water inundated Zebra, and the village was reborn as Osage Beach. At its core, the bridge linked land, water, and people to create a recreational jewel in the heart of the Midwest, and the people, roadside businesses, and lakeside resorts featured in this book were among the pioneers who made it all possible. The story begins with the construction of the Grand Glaize Bridge, which became known as the "Upside Down Bridge." US Highway 54 passes through Osage Beach, and this book follows the growth of the town as it spread east and west along the shoulders of the highway and out onto the peninsulas and shorelines of the lake.

The Ozarks

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Ozark Mountains reach into Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, forming a region with great natural beauty and a distinctive cultural and historical landscape. This comprehensive volume, a fully updated edition of a beloved classic, reaches into history, anthropology, economics, and geography to explore the complex relationships between the Ozarks' people and land through times of profound change. Drawing on more than thirty years of research, field observations, and interviews, Rafferty examines this subject matter through a range of topics: the settlement patterns and material cultures of Native Americans, French, Scotch-Irish, Germans, Italians, African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians in the region; population growth; the guerrilla warfare and battles of the Civil War; the cultural transformations wrought by railroads, roads, mass media, and modern communication systems; the discovery, development, and decline of the great mining districts; the various forms of agriculture and the felling of the region's vast forests; and the built landscape, from log cabins to Victorian mansions to strip malls. This new edition also explores the new and potent forces which have reshaped the region over the last twenty years: tourism and the growing service industry, suburbanization, rapid population growth and retirement living, and agribusiness. Lavishly illustrated with historic and contemporary photographs, maps, and charts.

 Tis Grace

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Allan Thompson was a self-destructive alcoholic who had lost everything but his devoted family when he finally hit rock bottom and heard the still, small voice of God beckoning him to a life of hope, joy, and the ministry of God's Word. Thompson grew up in Arkansas, Tennessee, and Oklahoma and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a journalism degree. His desire to become an advertising copywriter led him to New York, where he found a position in broadcast sales. He followed this career to Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Springfield, Missouri. Along the way, alcohol, "cunning, baffling, and powerful," took hold of his life and was progressively destroying him, his career, and his family. God miraculously intervened, saved him, and instantly relieved him of his reliance on alcohol. Through the marvelous work of the Holy Spirit, God then set out to break Thompson of his dependency on his own self and to bring him to reliance on Jesus alone. Thompson candidly tells of his struggles with insecurity (which led to his alcoholism), and his continuing struggles with poor self-esteem and other issues even after his conversion. Christians should be able to identify with Thompson's trials and joys, as he indeed has worked out his salvation "with fear and trembling." He has experienced what Paul wrote in Philippians 2:12 13: God has worked in him "to will and to act according to his good purpose." Thompson goes from a man who used the name of Jesus in vain to a man who passionately loves Jesus. Thompson believes God yearns to redeem every person so the love of Jesus may shine from each.
