The aim of the IV International Symposium on Hamiltonian Systems and Celestial Mechanics, HAMSYS-2001 was to join top researchers in the area of Celestial Mechanics, Hamiltonian systems and related topics in order to communicate new results and look forward for join research projects. For PhD students, this meeting offered also the opportunity of personal contact to help themselves in their own research, to call as well and promote the attention of young researchers and graduated students from our scientific community to the above topics, which are nowadays of interest and relevance in Celestial Mechanics and Hamiltonian dynamics. A glance to the achievements in the area in the last century came as a consequence of joint discussions in the workshop sessions, new problems were presented and lines of future research were delineated. Specific discussion topics included: New periodic orbits and choreographies in the n-body problem, singularities in few body problems, central configurations, restricted three body problem, geometrical mechanics, dynamics of charged problems, area preserving maps and Arnold diffusion.

This volume puts together several important lectures on the Hamiltonian Systems and Celestial Mechanics to form a comprehensive and authoritative collection of works on the subject. The papers presented in this volume are an outgrowth of the lectures that took place during the 'International Symposium on Hamiltonian Systems and Celestial Mechanics', which was held at the CIMAT (Centro de Investigacion en Matematicas, Guanajuato, Mexico) from September 30 to October 4, 1991. In general, the lectures explored the subject of the Hamiltonian Dynamics and Celestial Mechanics and emphasized its relationship with several aspects of topology, mechanics and dynamical systems.

The papers presented are an outgrowth of the lectures that took place during the “International Symposium on Hamiltonian Systems and Celestial Mechanics ”, which was held at Cocoyoc (Morelos, México) from September 13 to 17, 1994.

This proceedings volume is a collection of papers presented at the International Conference on SPT2004 focusing on symmetry, perturbation theory, and integrability.The book provides an updated overview of the recent developments in the various different fields of nonlinear dynamics, covering both theory and applications. Special emphasis is given to algebraic and geometric integrability, solutions to the N-body problem of the “choreography” type, geometry and symmetry of dynamical systems, integrable evolution equations, various different perturbation theories, and bifurcation analysis.The contributors to this volume include some of the leading scientists in the field, among them: I Anderson, D Bambusi, S Benenti, S Bolotin, M Fels, W Y Hsiang, V Matveev, A V Mikhailov, P J Olver, G Pucacco, G Sartori, M A Teixeira, S Terracini, F Verhulst and I Yehorchenko.

At the opening of the "Third Meeting on Celestial Mechanics - CELMEC III", strong sensations hit our minds. The conference (18-22 June 2001) was being held in Villa Mondragone, a beautiful complex of buildings and gardens located within the township of Monte Porzio Catone, on the hills surrounding Rome. A former papal residence, the building has been recently restored by the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" to host academic activities and events. The conference room is called "Salone degli Svizzeri": here, Gregory XIII, on February 24, 1582, gave its sanction to the reform of the Julian calendar and declared officially in use the calendar still adopted nowadays. The magnificent high walls and tall ceiling strongly resounded, giving to our voice a peculiar Vatican sound, which took us by surprise. May be - we thought - a distant echo of the very words of Gregory XIII proclaiming the modem calendar was still haunting the room. Around us, in the audience, many countries were represented, thus indicating that the idea of putting together the three "souls" of modem Celestial Mechanics - perturbation theories, solar and stellar system studies, spaceflight dynamic- had been successful. CELMEC III is in fact the latest of a series of meetings (the first two editions took place in 1993 and 1997 in L' Aquila, Italy) whose aim is to establish a common ground among people working in Celestial Mechanics, yet belonging to different institutions such as universities, astronomical observatories, research institutes, space agencies and industries.
