Hispanic Youth Employment Guidebook

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This guidebook was developed as an aid to communities seeking to create partnerships between public and private sector sources to reduce the youth unemployment among Hispanics. The International City Management Association (ICMA), as part of a project sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services, identifies six model ventures using the partnership approach and this guidebook is, in part, a report on these projects. The communities that participated were in New Mexico, California, and Florida. One section discusses characteristics of the Hispanic youth unemployment problems, with a history of Hispanics in the United States, demographics on the group, and the various barriers to employment. Another covers the general concept of public and private partnerships with specific reference to the Jobs Training Partnership Act (JTPA). Each of the six successful communities' programs are described, including information on funding, innovative approaches, problems, and points which were especially successful and which could be transferred to other communities. Finally, the peer matching component of the program in which two successful programs were matched with two communities wanting to initiate similar projects is described. Appended are an annotated list of national organizations dealing with youth unemployment and a list of local Hispanic employment organizations arranged by state. A bibliography of four pages is provided. (CG)

The Latina S Guide To Success In The Workplace

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This hands-on manual provides Latinas with the tools they need to succeed at work by examining some of the societal and cultural obstacles that hinder their progress. Despite being 20 million strong, Latinas represent America's most undervalued human resource. This career guide is the only one of its kind to focus specifically on empowering the working women of the Latina community to embrace success and build skills for workplace advancement. The Latina's Guide to Success in the Workplace explores the complexity of the Hispanic/Latino identity and the impact of this culture on professional mobility. The author asserts that there are five obstacles which Latinas confront within their own belief system: the idea that women do not need an education; the assumption that the needs of men come first; a belief that it is sinful to desire money; the opinion that Latinas should not be ambitious; and the mindset that successful women in the United States lose their femininity. Throughout the book, up-to-date research, case studies, and inspirational interviews offer strategies for overcoming the cultural factors that limit Latinas and providing a roadmap for achieving success.

The Field Guide To Fundraising For Nonprofits

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

With this book in hand, nonprofits can increase their fundraising potential-and their overall impact-by learning how to ramp up nearly every aspect of their fundraising programs in new and creative ways. Today's competitive and ever-shifting environment demands that nonprofits adopt a new approach to raising money. This book will show them how, in part by changing the way those charged with fundraising think about this all-important task. The book will help nongovernmental organizations plan better, write more powerful grants, craft more compelling appeals and other communications, engage board members and donors-and brag about all the great work they're doing in just the right way. It offers readers a fresh perspective on fundraising, as well as clear, practical strategies to build essential connections using varied tactics, including social media. Equally helpful is an eye-opening discussion about beliefs and attitudes that can stand in the way of fundraising success. Unlike books that focus on a single strategy such as grant writing, board development, or major gifts appeals, this volume is unique in that it details fundraising strategies that generate the highest return on investment. In doing so, the author provides a theoretical framework, creative ideas for taking best practices to the next level, and specific tools that can be applied to reach fundraising goals. By adopting the new framework, enhancing skills, and taking a fresh look at their task, nonprofits can raise the money they need to make a significant difference, regardless of their mission or cause.
