Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections have had a global impact, leading to a set of public health and social measures (PHSMs). These measures—such as hand hygiene, mask wearing, and social distancing—have affected people’s behavior and thus led to change in the transmission of infectious diseases. Studies of the impact of the opportunistic implementation of PHSMs on infectious diseases including respiratory virus infections during the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic have been reported. For example, seasonal influenza epidemics, sexual transmitted infections, and pediatric infectious diseases decreased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The worldwide COVID health crisis has affected virtually every aspect of daily life, namely the conditions in which we are born, grow, learn, work, and age. For the last three years, for instance, we have engaged in social distancing, remote meetups and seemingly endless Zoom calls. We have also changed how we view healthcare, with many increasing their use of telemedicine. Many have also abandoned city living for a more comfortable life in suburban, peri-rural and rural environments, with greater access to trees and parkland. Travel has been significantly impacted-disrupting existing social networks but also potentially deepening more localized social networks. For some, these changes were only in initial lockdown period(s); for others, these changes may be ongoing. The idea for our book emerged from overwhelming evidence that the pandemic intersects with nearly every social determinant of population health and aggravating existing inequalities in social conditions and health outcomes"--

Volume I.A An outbreak of a respiratory disease first reported in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and the causative agent was discovered in January 2020 to be a novel betacoronovirus of the same subgenus as SARS-CoV and named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has rapidly disseminated worldwide, with clinical manifestations ranging from mild respiratory symptoms to severe pneumonia and a fatality rate estimated around 2%. Person to person transmission is occurring both in the community and healthcare settings. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently declared the COVID-19 epidemic a public health emergency of international concern. The ongoing outbreak presents many clinical and public health management challenges due to limited understanding of viral pathogenesis, risk factors for infection, natural history of disease including clinical presentation and outcomes, prognostic factors for severe illness, period of infectivity, modes and extent of virus inter-human transmission, as well as effective preventive measures and public health response and containment interventions. There are no antiviral treatment nor vaccine available but fast track research and development efforts including clinical therapeutic trials are ongoing across the world. Managing this serious epidemic requires the appropriate deployment of limited human resources across all cadres of health care and public health staff, including clinical, laboratory, managerial and epidemiological data analysis and risk assessment experts. It presents challenges around public communication and messaging around risk, with the potential for misinformation and disinformation. Therefore, integrated operational research and intervention, learning from experiences across different fields and settings should contribute towards better understanding and managing COVID-19. This Research Topic aims to highlight interdisciplinary research approaches deployed during the COVID-19 epidemic, addressing knowledge gaps and generating evidence for its improved management and control. It will incorporate critical, theoretically informed and empirically grounded original research contributions using diverse approaches, experimental, observational and intervention studies, conceptual framing, expert opinions and reviews from across the world. The Research Topic proposes a multi-dimensional approach to improving the management of COVID-19 with scientific contributions from all areas of virology, immunology, clinical microbiology, epidemiology, therapeutics, communications as well as infection prevention and public health risk assessment and management studies.

This edited volume is a collection of selected research articles discussing the analysis of infectious diseases by using mathematical modelling in recent times. Divided into two parts, the book gives a general and country-wise analysis of Covid-19. Analytical and numerical techniques for virus models are presented along with the application of mathematical modelling in the analysis of their spreading rates and treatments. The book also includes applications of fractional differential equations as well as ordinary, partial and integrodifferential equations with optimization methods. Public and global health professionals realize that despite significant advances in improving population health and preventing high mortality from communicable and non-communicable diseases and managing/treating both communicable and con-communicable diseases the global population health status remains fragile. This is partly due to the global life pattern in the 21st century making world as a global village. Individuals’ movements in global society have been facilitated rapidly and the current advance in travel and trade across different geographical locations allow rapid spread of any newly identified infectious agents. Therefore, relatively the likelihood of an outbreak and pandemic increases if there is no suitably coordinated active global surveillance in place.
