This study demonstrates that the Gospel attributed to John gives an inaccurate account of the life and teaching of Jesus. It shows that this Gospel was finished during a fierce conflict between the Johannine community and the Jewish community. During this conflict, the Johannine community hailed Jesus as God, and declared that the Jews were children of the devil. They attributed their beliefs to Jesus, and portrayed him as quarrelling with the Jews as they did. Consequently, this document is fiercely anti-Jewish and has been used to fuel anti-semitism - reasons for the author to challenge the fitness of John's Gospel to be in anyone's sacred scriptures.

The essays in Reading the Gospel of John’s Christology as Jewish Messianism: Royal, Prophetic, and Divine Messiahs seek to interpret John’s Jesus as part of Second Temple Jewish messianic expectations. The Fourth Gospel is rarely considered part of the world of early Judaism. While many have noted John’s Jewishness, most have not understood John’s Messiah as a Jewish messiah. The Gospel according to John presents Jesus in a unique way as compared with other New Testament writings. Scholars have long puzzled and pondered over why this should be. In this book, James McGrath offers a convincing explanation of how and why the author of the Fourth Gospel arrived at a christological portrait of Jesus that is so different from that of other New Testament authors, and yet at the same time clearly has its roots in earlier tradition. McGrath suggests that as the author of this Gospel sought to defend his beliefs about Jesus against the objections brought by opponents, he developed and drew out further implications from the beliefs he inherited. The book studies this process using insights from the field of sociology which helps to bring methodological clarity to the important issue of the development of Johannine Christology.

Second-century Christians had a significant role in shaping the import of the literary sources that they inherited from the first century through their editorial revisions and the church traditions that they appended to them. Michael J. Kok critically investigates the supposed clues that encouraged select Christian intellectuals to infer that John, one of Jesus' chosen twelve apostles, was the mysterious "disciple whom Jesus loved" and to ascribe the fourth canonical Gospel as well as four other New Testament books back to him. In contrast to many studies of New Testament ethics, which treat the New Testament in general and Paul in particular, this book focuses on the person of Jesus himself. Mission in the Gospels considers the gospels through a twin lens: first, the nature of Jesus' own mission (as understood by the evangelists), and secondly, the desire of the gospel writers and their churches to gain some understanding of their own mission by interpreting Jesus' attitudes and actions (especially with regard to the Gentiles).
