BOOK EXCERPT:

Generation Disaster: Coming of Age Post-9/11 focuses on the numerous stressors that have had an impact on today's emerging adults including climate change, school shootings, economic recession, and of course, the national trauma of 9/11. Disaster mental health expert Karla Vermeulen draws on a combination of statistics, academic sources, and her own original research, including results from a nationally representative survey, to examine these challenges as they are experienced by emerging adults who continue to fight for their future. The result is a corrective to previous works that dismiss "kids today" as fragile or entitled, and instead emphasizes the generation's strength in the face of unprecedented uncertainties and obstacles.

Dungeon Hacks

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In 1980, computers were instruments of science and mathematics, military secrets and academia. Stern administrators lorded over sterile university laboratories and stressed one point to the wide-eyed students privileged enough to set foot within them: Computers were not toys. Defying authority, hackers seized control of monolithic mainframes to create a new breed of computer game: the roguelike, cryptic and tough-as-nails adventures drawn from text-based symbols instead of state-of-the-art 3D graphics. Despite their visual simplicity, roguelike games captivate thousands of players around the world. From the author of the bestselling Stay Awhile and Listen series, Dungeon Hacks: How NetHack, Angband, and Other Roguelikes Changed the Course of Video Games introduces you to the visionaries behind some of the most popular roguelikes of all time and shows how their creations paved the way for the blockbuster videogames of today—and beyond.

Never Stop Learning

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Success, happiness, love, appreciation, and respect. During the course of my 80-year life, I cannot remember meeting anyone who didn’t want to obtain each of these goals, collectively a fulfillment of their lives, an affirmation that their lives really made a difference and meant something, and that their efforts were worthwhile. At the same time I know too many people who feel just the opposite, that they, compared to others, have been unsuccessful. And they are not as happy as they hoped to be. My purpose in writing this book is to uplift and help them. Never Stop Learning is a collection of 21 stories that I originally wrote for my 10 grandchildren, as helpful guidance to assist them in navigating life more easily and successfully. Subsequently, I became convinced that if my stories could help my family, then they could help many other people. This book is the result. Each story’s purpose is to teach lessons defining the keys to unlocking success, happiness, love, appreciation and respect. Who should read this book? Truthfully, the ones who could get the most benefit are 16-35-year-olds because they have the most time left, maybe the greatest need, plus they are going through the years where they are making many key decisions in rapid order about education, careers, jobs, and perhaps marriage and children. But I truly believe anyone from 8 to 100 would learn from the book’s lessons. I state this because some of my reviewers in their 80’s told me so. This I know. None of us will ever know everything about most anything. We still have plenty to learn. Personally, I am never going to stop trying to learn. Like me, others still have that hunger for knowledge and understanding. I hope more will join us in that pursuit. Never stop learning. You won’t regret it.

Margin Calls

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Take Wall Street and the Supreme Court, throw in a corrupt cop, a loan shark and a hot dog vendor and you've got Margin Calls and Other Disasters. This story is true, intriguing and maybe even unbelievable at times, but when you finish reading it, any disaster that comes to mind now will be a faint memory. Did I give any thought to the consequences of suing an attorney for malpractice? What are the chances of a simple hot dog vendor arguing, let alone ever winning his own case in the Supreme Court? This story begins when I was a little boy whose father just happened to be a Marine Corp fighter pilot, an ace in the F-4 Phantom. It follows my life through growing up with a learning disorder and on to the French Riviera then on to a short unsuccessful career as a stock day trader. The FBI investigates a corrupt cop and a loan shark. One testifies at my trial and the other takes the Fifth. I hire an attorney who abandons me and take over my own case. 'Here Lies My Attorney"
