Semantic Web Technologies And Legal Scholarly Publishing

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This work deals with the applications of Semantic Publishing technologies in the legal domain, i.e., the use of Semantic Web technologies to address issues related to the Legal Scholarly Publishing. Research in the field of Law has a long tradition in the application of semantic technologies, such as Semantic Web and Linked Data, to real-world scenarios. This book investigates and proposes solutions for three main issues that Semantic Publishing needs to address within the context of the Legal Scholarly Publishing: the need of tools for linking document text to a formal representation of its meaning; the lack of complete metadata schemas for describing documents according to the publishing vocabulary and the absence of effective tools and user interfaces for easily acting on semantic publishing models and theories. In particular, this work introduces EARMARK, a markup meta language that allows one to create markup documents without the structural and semantic limits imposed by markup languages such as XML. EARMARK is a platform to link the content layer of a document with its intended formal semantics and it can be used with the Semantic Publishing and Referencing (SPAR) Ontologies, another topic in this book. SPAR Ontologies are a collection of formal models providing an upper semantic layer for describing the publishing domain. Using EARMARK as a foundation for SPAR descriptions opens up to a semantic characterisation of all the aspects of a document and of its parts. Finally, four user-friendly tools are introduced: LODE, KC-Viz, Graffoo and Gaffe. They were expressly developed to facilitate the interaction of publishers and domain experts with Semantic Publishing technologies by shielding such users from the underlying formalisms and semantic models of such technologies.

Explanation In Biology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Patterns of explanation in biology have long been recognized as different from those deployed in other scientific disciplines, especially that of physics. Celebrating the diversity of interpretative models found in biology, this volume details their varying types as well as explaining their relationships to one another. It covers the key differentials with other sciences in the nature of explanation, such as the existence in biology of varieties unheard of in the physical sciences, such as teleological, evolutionary and even functional explanations. Offering a wealth of fresh analysis of the phenomenon, chapters examine aspects ranging from the role of mathematics in explaining cell development to the complexities thrown up by evolutionary-developmental biology, where explanation is altered by multidisciplinarity itself. They cover major domains such as ecology and systems biology, as well as contemporary trends, such as the mechanistic explanations spawned by progress in molecular biology. With contributions from researchers of many different nationalities, the book provides a many-angled perspective on a revealing feature of the discipline of biology.

Taxonomic Nomenclature

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book suggests an in-depth look at nomenclature in systematics instead of providing another "instruction for use" of various Codes of nomenclature. The focus is on ideas of what taxonomic nomenclature is as a part of the professional language of systematics considered in its full historical and conceptual scope. Basic concepts of nomenclature are outlined, and their development characterized; a hierarchy of fundamental principles of nomenclature are summarized; and the relationship between taxonomic nomenclature and taxonomic theory discussed. This book is addressed to those who would like to go beyond the boundaries of existing Codes to look at the subject from a more general, mostly theoretical standpoint. Key Features • Provides a review of the role of nomenclature in systematics • Reviews the conceptual scope and historical contexts of nomenclature • Analyzes fundamental principles of nomenclature • Outlines the historical development of nomenclature • Reviews the rules of nomenclature in botany, zoology, microbiology, and horticulture Related Titles Mishler, B. Socrates

BOOK EXCERPT:

SOCRATES is an international, multi-disciplinary, refereed and indexed scholarly journal. This journal appears quarterly in English. Disciplines Covered: English literature; Philosophy; Politics, Law and Governance/Public Administration. About this issue: This issue of Socrates has been divided into three sections. The first section is English Language & Literature. The paper authored by Mounir Sanhaji discusses the construction of ‘otherness’ in media discourse that is meant to legitimize and naturalize the reproduction of the ideology of opposition that widens the gap between the identification of “Self” and “Other”. The second section of this issue is Philosophy. The Paper authored by Nadia Maftouni has conceptualized “Scientart” and has discussed the interaction between the worlds of art and science. The Paper authored by Dabbagh Hossein has intended to propose a critical leap in Persian music which leads to the creation of three different paradigms in Persian music. The Paper authored by Hareesh Alikkal Gopalakrishnan and Upendra C sketches out the intractable nature of species through a historical account of the species problem. Through this paper, they have tried to decipher a ‘common thread’ that, perhaps, binds all our ideas of species together. The Paper authored by Tang Man-to aims at explaining the ambiguous meaning of forgetting in Meno, Phaedo, Theaetetus and Philebus. It concludes by drawing attention to Paul Ricoeur’s critical examination of Plato’s philosophy of forgetting that he fails to provide an effective resolution to the ordinary forgetting as an attack on the reliability of memory. The Paper authored by Viviana Yaccuzzi Polisena concluded that the Being cannot be localized, it is infinite and continuous; the Being bears the cosmic code. Therefore, existence basically shares the same cosmic information because everything was thought for its flutter to eternity. The Paper authored by Alexandros Schismenos illuminates the importance of time for philosophical thought and, more generally, for human social and psychical life, in the context of the ontology of Cornelius Castoriadis. Castoriadis, who asserted that “being is time – and not in the horizon of time”, correlated history to society and being to temporality within the social-historical stratum, the ontological plane created by human existence, where “existence is signification”. The Paper authored by Miquel Ricart is primarily in Spanish with it’s abstract in English and Spanish. This paper aims to interpret and comment on some of Fernando Vallejo's thoughts contained in his novel El Desbarrancadero. It says that the Colombian author's text includes deep reflections on essential issues of human existence and their fundamental circumstances. Throughout the pages of El Desbarrancadero, ideas about life are exposed in their most critical aspect, masterfully described by Vallejo. The third section of this issue is Political Science. The Paper authored by Manas Roy enquires into the challenges in front of the Government in India for the successful implementation of E-governance services. It also tends to find out the potential opportunities available.
