Based on extensive survey data, this book examines how the population of Japan has experienced and processed three decades of rapid social change from the highly egalitarian high growth economy of the 1980s to the economically stagnating and demographically shrinking gap society of the 2010s. It discusses social attitudes and values towards, for example, work, gender roles, family, welfare and politics, highlighting certain subgroups which have been particularly affected by societal changes. It explores social consciousness and concludes that although many Japanese people identify as middle class, their reasons for doing so have changed over time, with the result that the optimistic view prevailing in the 1980s, confident of upward mobility, has been replaced by people having a much more realistic view of their social status.

This edited book is the first one written in English that deals comprehensively with behavior metrics. The term “behaviormetrics” comprehends the research including all sorts of quantitative approaches to disclose human behavior. Researchers in behavior metrics have developed, extended, and improved methods such as multivariate statistical analysis, survey methods, cluster analysis, machine learning, multidimensional scaling, corresponding analysis or quantification theory, network analysis, clustering, factor analysis, test theory, and related factors. In the spirit of behavior metrics, researchers applied these methods to data obtained by surveys, experiments, or websites from a diverse range of fields. The purpose of this book is twofold. From being the last country in the world to open its doors to global trade in the 1850s to becoming the second industrialized nation in the 1960s, Japan has experienced impressive economic and social development over the last two centuries. In the last three decades, however, it became entrenched in a long phase of economic stagnation, dropping from second to third place in the global economy, having been overtaken by China in 2010. Inspired by the recent works on the history of capitalism, this history of business shows that the Japanese company was not the product of a unique national culture. Japanese capitalism was largely shaped by a political, economic, and institutional environment, which offered a variety of new opportunities to entrepreneurs, who also played a central role in the process of change. Rural capitalism that formed during the period of national seclusion shifted to industrial capitalism after the opening of the nation to global trade: this form of capitalism was close to those observed in other late industrializing countries, and was characterized by the monopolistic domination of large business groups or zaibatsu during the interwar years. The Second World War saw the emergence of wartime capitalism with the central government as the dominant actor in the economy, and, after 1945, the need to reconstruct the country and catch-up with advanced Western economies gave birth to a new form of capitalism based on a cooperative relationship between business and the state: communitarian capitalism, more broadly known as the Japanese Business System. The liberalization and deregulation brought new changes in the business system, marked by the emergence of financial capitalism in the 1980s and 1990s.

On August 15, 1945, the voice of Emperor Hirohito cried out from every radio station in Japan, announcing the end of World War II. Legendary entrepreneur Ando Momofoku had touched a broad range of interests in textiles, aviation, coal, and schools. In 1951, he launched into the ramen market with a guiding principle that was unprecedented: dried noodles that could be ready to eat in only three minutes. Easy, nutritious, and delicious. Resounding commercial success followed, and one of the world’s largest food companies was born—Nissin Food. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jean-François M. Chambon spent his youth studying in Paris, France. He was married in the artists’ district of Montparnasse, which was his principal place of residence for more than thirty years. In 1990, he suddenly left for Hong Kong and settled down in Wanchai. In 1992, he joined the very secret world of international finance and was trained by the best. After 2000, he again became actively engaged in the development of Asia. In this role, he travels to the land of the rising sun, Japan, on a regular basis. To this day, the main elements of his new mission remain quite unknown. All we can gather is that it concerns the financial circles of the region, and that large Japanese and Asian groups are involved. In 2018, the author began a battle against an enemy within. What he himself calls a war, has taken him at times beyond his own limits. This fight, immortalized in the book “Papa, the fight for life”, continues to this day and can only end in victory.
