This book provides an analysis of one of the ancient world's foremost political realists, Kautilya. Kautilya's treatise Arthashastra stands as one of the great political books of the ancient world, its ideas on the science of politics strikingly similar to those of Thucydides, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Clausewitz, and even Sun Tzu. The author's commentary on Kautilya's text draws out the essential realist arguments for modern political analysis and demonstrates the continued relevance of Kautilya's work to modern Indian strategic thinking and our understanding of the relationship between politics and economics. Kautilya's Arthshastra contains some universal truths which transcend the boundaries of time and space. The main object of the present work is to identify solutions from Kautilya's Arthshastra to the issues being faced by the economies today and to examine the Kautilian Model in the context of contemporary societies in general and India in particular. Prof. S.D.Chamola is an eminent eco-nomist. During the course of his long association with the CCS Haryana Agriculture University, Hisar, he worked in various capacities in the fields of teaching and research. He headed the Department of Agricultural Economics there, from 1991 to 1994 and the Department of Business Adm-inistration, from 1996 to 2001. He was Senior Fellow, ICSSR, from 2003 to 2005.

It is true that in the study of Political Science, International Relations, Public Administration, and other related discipline Arthashastra is yet to receive due recognition in India and abroad. In this context, the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) Shimla had hosted a two-day National Seminar on 'Reflections on the Relevance of Arthashastra in the 21st Century' This volume is the collection of selected papers presented at the national seminar. India's gift to the world-Kautilya's Arthashastra addresses almost every aspect of governance from the duties and objectives of the ruler to social welfare, financial management, town planning, law and justice and foreign affairs. Lost for centuries, it was miraculously rediscovered by Rudrapatna Shamasastry, a Sanskrit scholar, in 1905 CE. This version, especially adapted for young readers, aims to acquaint them with a heritage work, while providing insights into the nitty gritty of running a country. Using examples from history as well as current geopolitics, it attempts to illustrate how Kautilya's theories of governance remain as relevant as they were two thousand years ago.

There has always been an inherent tension in the Vedic system between the negative affirmative approaches, between life in the world and renunciation. The book explores the manner in which dharma and yoga harmonize the tensing between the inner and the outward. The book goes on explain how Vedic management, through the concepts of dharma and yoga, encourage peace and concord through selflessness and cooperative behavior and the sacrifice of the ego, opinions and strongly held beliefs so as to harmonize with fellow human beings. The Upanishad system which interiorize Vedic through the yogic way of meditation and contemplation is also examined. The book goes on the to delineate the concept of dharmic management as applied to social concerns and the polity. This is through an examination of the dhramashastras and the two epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The yogic system as elaborated by Lord Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita is studied to see its impact on managements. The conclusion reached is that Lord Sri Krishan makes management more an art than a science while also making the system flexible and creative. The normative Vedic management system was utilized by Gandhi to set up an organization that toppled one of the mightiest empires known to history. The manner in which this was done is also examined. Some reference form the latest management littérateur are also there and it is left to the reader to decide whether Vedic management is relevant today.

Eastern philosophy (EP) has often been neglected in mainstream academic discourse. Philosophy is the way of looking at, understanding, interpreting, and fundamentally bringing together love and wisdom (lovism). This study contributes to a wider understanding of international relations and philosophies in a world where the balance of power is shifting and emerging as superpower countries India and China are increasingly growing in importance.
