BOOK EXCERPT:
Few tales of disaster at sea are able to convey the survivors' feelings of fear, hopelessness, and horror. This book is one of those successful few...the author, her husband, and their 5-year-old daughter were on a yacht cruise on the Bay of Biscay when they were struck by a storm. Fearing that the yacht was about to sink, the three took to the liferaft in mountainous seas. Less than a week later the husband died. Nine days later, the daughter died. Shortly afterwards, the author was rescued. But that wasn't the end of the story. The media circus took hold. There were insinuations that this may have been more than a straight disaster at sea, that the author may have been involved in-what?-an insurance scam? neglect? murder?

BOOK EXCERPT:
The time is 1931. The three places we first visit are Iowa, South Africa and Alabama. The characters finally end up as neighbors in Alabama and the story is about three young men whose growing up years were typical for that place and that era. What makes it different is that rather than be in a culture that accepted racial bias as a way of life these three young men simply did not accept the status quo. One of the young men was the son of the local minister who had originally come from the Midwest and moved to Birmingham when his father became a minister there. The second friend was a native South African and arrived in Birmingham when his mother who was a nanny accompanied a family which had immigrated to the South. The third, whose father had been an alcoholic causing his mother to divorce him and who was raising her two children alone. The boys met and eventually became close friends and classmates. Each family has a fascinating history in the own right but after the boys meet the story becomes more about them as a trio.. The boys became fast friends. The first two boys became star athletes and entered the University of Alabama on football scholarships. They all entered the University together, pledged the same fraternity and continued their lives together. In their early teen years the boys had become friends with some young Black men their own age living neirar them and that friendship has something to do with later developments in the story. That part of the story is intriguing. Each character has a story of their own but the story of the three helps explain who they were and what they became. It is reflective of the times more than some would want to remember. You will enjoy the journey into their lives and perhaps better understand the tensions of a society which had nor yet faced the dark side of its culture. It is truly reflective of those times in the South, times that in some places might still be trying to exist.

BOOK EXCERPT:
God Don't Lie is the story of Richard Smith, who has lived almost three decades inside some of the worst prisons in the state of Texas. At age five, his family moved to the big city of Houston. There his life spun completely out of control, resulting in drug abuse, violence, and multiple incarcerations as a juvenile. At sixteen, he was arrested for murder, merely fifteen hours after being released from a juvenile facility. After being tried as an adult, he entered prison at age seventeen with a ninety-nine-year sentence. After experiencing violence in some of Texas's worst prisons, he joined the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang. He worked his way up to the rank of captain and got lost in its world of violence and racism. He was placed in long-term solitary confinement in 1993 and spent the next thirteen years locked in a cage within the cage. He was moved around to some of Texas's most violent prisons until one day, he woke up to the insanity of his life and decided to change. In 2006, he was released from solitary confinement and began the long road of rehabilitation in a place not designed to rehabilitate. He achieved two associate's degrees, as well as completed vocational trades in diesel mechanics and welding. At thirty-nine years of age, he turned his life to God and began living as a godly man inside the ungodly walls of prison. The title of this book rests on a statement made by his grandmother during a frantic call from his mom when he was arrested for murder. His mom thought he would be given the death penalty. His grandmother assured her that he would not because God had great things planned for his life, and "God don't lie."

BOOK EXCERPT:
The German invasion of Poland in September 1939 abruptly ended author Jan Rosinski's student life, and propelled him into an activist role in the Polish resistance organization Armia Krajowa. In short order he became a talented forger of Nazi documents, especially travel papers that allowed many refugees to escape the city. His university studies in chemistry and physics created a role for him as an effective saboteur. Narrowly escaping death on several occasions, he was fearless in his pursuits. His dislike of the Nazi leadership was exceeded by an even greater hatred of the Soviet Army as it invaded Poland from the East less than a month later. Poland would be sealed off from the West for fifty years. Rosinski's travails as a POW in Germany eventually led him to the Allied forces in Germany; the U.S. became the beneficiary of his brilliant discoveries in atmospheric science. Jan was accompanied on his life's journey by his wife Barbara (d. 1993), who served as a medical officer in the underground army; Jan died in 2012.
