BOOK EXCERPT:

Life Narratives of African Americans in Iowa speaks of life in Iowa from the nineteenth century to the present day. The voices in these pages range from factory workers to doctors, politicians to lawyers. Each individual shares interesting insights into what it was like for African Americans in the state. Racism was prevalent, with each person encountering it in some form, but despite these challenges, those profiled here made a significant contribution to society. Willie Stevenson Glanton recalls her time spent as the first African American woman in the Iowa Legislature. George Boykin remembers the early days at the Sanford Center in Sioux City. Although a physician, Percy Harris tells about the problems of finding a place to live in Cedar Rapids. Bernice Jones recalls challenging the status quota as a federal government worker in the Quad Cities. The participants in this oral history ranged in age from late 50s to early 90s at the time of their interviews.

Teaching Lives Contemporary Pedagogies Of Life Narratives

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The contemporary ‘boom’ in the publication and consumption of auto/biographical representation has made life narratives a popular and compelling subject for twenty-first century classrooms. The proliferation of forms, media, terminologies, and disciplinary approaches in a range of educational contexts invites discussion of how and why we teach these materials. Drawing on their experiences in disciplines including creative writing, language studies, education, literary studies, linguistics, and psychology, contributors to this volume explore some of the central issues that inspire, enable, and complicate the teaching of life writing subjects and texts, examining the ideologies, issues, methods, and practices that underpin contemporary pedagogies of auto/biography. The collection acknowledges the potential perils that life writing texts and subjects represent for instructors, with a series of short essays by leading auto/biography scholars who reflect on their failed experiences teaching life narratives, and share strategies for negotiating the particular challenges these texts can present. Exploring issues including teaching across genres, analyzing writing about trauma, decolonizing pedagogies, and challenging assumptions (our own, our students’, and our colleagues’), Teaching Lives illuminates what makes the teaching of life narratives different from teaching other kinds of subjects or texts, and why auto/biography has such a critical role to play in contemporary education. This book was originally published as a special issue of a/b: Auto/Biography Studies.

BOOK EXCERPT:

This groundbreaking book presents conceptual, theoretical and applied research on women's life histories. The authors fulfill two needs: they provide a collection of essays that grapple with controversial issues in the study of life history, and they present many narratives from women of color, the majority collected and interpreted by women of color. The individual chapters offer a variety of voices linked by a philosophical and political orientation that places women of color at the center of scholarly inquiry rather than at the periphery. Ultimately, readers find in this text innovative ways of reconceptualizing the complexities of women's lives.

The Frederick Douglass Encyclopedia

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A new cornerstone reference for students, scholars, and general readers, on Frederick Douglass—his life, writings, speeches, political views, and legacy. Like no other reference before it, The Frederick Douglass Encyclopedia celebrates and investigates the life, writings, and activism of one of the most influential African Americans in U.S. history. The Frederick Douglass Encyclopedia offers more than 100 alphabetically organized entries covering Douglass's extraordinary journey from childhood in bondage to forceful spokesperson for equality and freedom before, during, and after the Civil War. In addition to biographical details, the book looks at the full breadth of Douglass's writings and speeches, as well as the events that shaped his intellect and political views. Together, these entries create an enduring portrait of one of the nation's most iconic figures, a man who went from slavery to invited guest in Abraham Lincoln's White House, whose commitment to freedom for all led to his participation in the first women's rights conference at Seneca Falls, and whose profound influence ranged well beyond the borders of the United States.
