As citizenship is lifelong and life-wide, the function of adult education is crucial to enable individual members of society to continue learning and improving their skills in the face of changing democratic societies. In recognition of the need to adjust higher education to democratic societies’ needs, this book focuses on examples of educational practices concerned with developing the necessary lifelong learning skills for democratic citizenship in the information era, with an emphasis on teacher education. The practices presented in this book primarily address the integration of lifelong learning skills with democratic citizenship skills, encapsulated in the concept of ‘lifelong citizenship’. Disability is a complex multidimensional social construct where the type of disability and the level of support of individuals needs to be considered within leisure provision. In a leisure context, people with a disability often face a multitude of constraints to participation. However, when leisure is possible, the benefits are substantial and worth pursuing. While other marginalised populations have received a great deal of attention across disciplines and in the field of leisure and recreation, disability has received comparatively less attention and generally in isolation to the leisure context. This book concentrates on "disability citizenship in leisure". The chapters focus on examining the leisure lives of people with different types of disability by supporting their leisure endeavours through innovations in technology, service provision and the imagination. Each chapter has a different social setting, involves different groups of people with disability, and challenges conventional wisdom about what is possible when ability is seen, nurtured and, then, flourishing with the opportunities provided. Rather than leisure being seen in isolation, the context of this book explores leisure as part of everyday lives through valuing Management issues that centre on constraints to sport participation, supply side attributes, participant behaviours, consumption of disability sport, policy implementation, and sponsor congruence. We situate the book in the context of further challenging researchers to think beyond disability as a context in their research and engagement of the person as a citizen in leisure opportunities, as opposed to a disability. Older people are, like younger people, citizens in the communities of the nations in which they live. This book sees ageing as a life journey that incorporates a process of citizening, in which people build their identity as part of their family and community. But the social experience of illness, frailty, disability and reaching the end of life may de-citizen older people by devaluing the social identity that comes from continuing social engagement. We de-citizen older people by emphasizing dependence on services and their cost to public expenditure instead of valuing the interdependence of participation and mutual respect. In this groundbreaking book, Malcolm Payne argues that social work with older people must build re-citizening practice strategies to value both the common and the special aspects of the citizenship of older people. Current models of social care and social work create dependency, rather than relying on values of participative interdependence.
