About the Book The author was living in a Senior Independent Living Center in Severna Park MD, when the Covid 19 pandemic struck. Everything was locked down. She was bored. What better time to write about “what was it like back when” as her family had been urging her to do. She begins her book by inviting you to a holiday dinner, speaking to the reader, personally. Her keen sense of humor is obvious as she tells of growing up in a small town in the hills of western Maryland. It was 1924. In 1941, when attending college, WWII was raging on two fronts. She wanted to help. She spent 2 summers working at a Women’s Land Army Camp, harvesting crops. The army desperately needed Physical Therapists. Having the required biology credits, she accepted the Army’s offer for training, at an army hospital and became a Physical Therapist. She describes working with soldiers with amputated legs and peripheral nerve injuries. They were not pitied but encouraged to find humor even in such situations. She writes of her excitement and wonder as she travels to Norway, the Passion Play in Germany, the Canyons and Parks in the west. There are funny tales of tent camping with her brother and sister-in-law. She drove her “little red sable” and followed them, using a CB to communicate, (calling M & M, this is Red Sable, over) In her book Esther Davis Lang has made history interesting, funny and easy to read.

Opt out of expectations and live a more intentional life with this refreshing guide from the national bestselling author of The Year of Less. We all follow our own path in life. At least, that's what we're told. In reality, many of us either do what is expected of us, or follow the invisible but well-worn paths that lead to what is culturally acceptable. For some, those paths are fine -- even great. But they leave some of us feeling disconnected from ourselves and what we really want. When that discomfort finally outweighs the fear of trying something new, we're ready to opt out. After going through this process many times, Cait Flanders found there is an incredible parallel between taking a different path in life and the psychological work it takes to summit a mountain -- especially when you decide to go solo. In Adventures in Opting Out, she offers a trail map to help you with both. As you'll see, reaching the first viewpoint can be easy -- and it offers a glimpse of what you're walking toward. Climbing to the summit for the full view is worth it. But in the space between those two peaks you will enter a world completely unknown to you, and that is the most difficult part of the path to navigate. With Flanders's guidance and advice, drawn from her own journey and stories of others, you'll have all the encouragement and insight you'll need to take the path less traveled and create the life you want. Just step up to the trailhead and expect it to be an adventure.

Bill Millard is a commercial attorney with an international law firm in Dallas, Texas, and life could not be better. On top of his lucrative job, he is married with two wonderful children, lives in a nice neighborhood with great schools, and is a proud Texan. But his world comes crashing down as his health starts to decline. At first, it’s not clear what is wrong, but then he is diagnosed with several near-fatal diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, which is a progressive nervous system disease that causes a loss of muscle control. He loses his family, career, home, and health. After a period in a comatose state, he wakes up as a quadriplegic, suffering severe seizures. He is unable to eat, drink, swallow, speak, stand, breathe without respiratory care, or carry on life as he knew it. In this inspiring memoir, Millard reveals how he coped with his diagnosis and made a miraculous recovery, spending seven-plus years fighting for his life in long-term health care facilities, physical rehabilitation facilities, and other centers. Millard’s story also offers a unique first-hand patient’s perspective as to what it is like to live in skilled and senior healthcare facilities today, containing many observations on what he thinks makes a better facility for patients and their families.
