Born into a dark, unhappy childhood and battling severe mental and physical health issues all through her adulthood, Lucy Maud Montgomery had a challenging private life. But she gave the world Anne Shirley — the freckle-faced, fiercely independent redhead as representative of Canada as the maple leaf. Anne of Green Gables is considered one of the greatest works in Canadian literature. Available in thirty-two editions, it continues to be immortalized on television, film and stage. Determined to succeed against all odds, Lucy Maud Montgomery published twenty-three books over a thirty-year period — her writing still resonates with readers today. Updated with the latest research — encompassing the last few years of Lucy's life and death — and beautifully illustrated with photographs, this biography recounts the story of Anne's creator and her contrasting public and private lives.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: A, University of Gdansk (English Philology), course: American Studies, language: English, abstract: To what extent does the representation of women (and men) in the work "Anne of Green Gables" by Lucy Maud Montgomery reflect the place and time in which the work was written? How are the relationships between men and women or those between members of the same sex, presented in the work? The thesis deals with the question whether Anne of Green Gables series could be seen as a feminist one. Anne Shirley might be seen as a feminist character - she is smart, intelligent, achieves more than the majority of her peers, she is not feeble and she is able to escape some of the most prevailing stereotypes about women of the Western world. Anne Blythe, however, changes into a matron, whose only interests are gossiping, matchmaking and being Mrs. Dr., a respectable woman. Relationships shown in the earlier novels are quite feminist—they are either equal or the woman is the empowered partner. Characters are allowed to voice critical opinions on men and marriage, and these opinions are not ridiculed. Later on it changes for the worse—women are always the submissive ones, spinsters are not respectable, and unconventional opinions are mocked. Anne of Green Gables series is not a feminist one - only the earlier novels possess the necessary characteristics.

Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg (Institut für Anglistik), course: Children's Literature, language: English, abstract: In her book The Second Sex (Beauvoir 1953: 362) the world-famous French philosopher and feminist Simone de Beauvoir writes that "[t]he adolescent girl will devote a special love to Nature: still more than the adolescent boy, she worships it. Unconquered, inhuman Nature subsumes most clearly the totality of what exists. The adolescent girl has not yet acquired for her use any portion of the universal: hence it is her kingdom as a whole; when she takes possession of it, she also proudly takes possession of herself." The idea of nature as a safe haven and retreat where a young girl refuges to and repeatedly finds solace and empowerment also penetrates children's literature. What Annis Pratt calls The Green-World Archetype (Pratt 1981: 16-24), "an adolescent girl who lives close to nature, is one of the most common female protagonists in children's fiction". (Nikolajewa 2002: 332) Nature features prominently in the novels of the 20th century Canadian authoress Lucy Maud Montgomery best known for her classic girl's book Anne of Green Gables. In all of her books Montgomery's protagonists are female heroes. The heroines of her novels and short stories vary from each other in age. Out of her twenty-one books eleven focus on female protagonists in late childhood or early adolescence of about nine to approximately eleven years of age. (Epperly 1992: 7) A prominent theme that runs through all of those novels is the development of self-confidence of the, at the outset of the story, powerless young heroine. Throughout the storylines each one of the young girls "learns to value herself in relation to the surrounding community and culture" (Epperly 1992: 7) - and nature, more precisely the fictionally adapted landscape of L.M. Montgomery's
