Multivariable Flight Control Design With Uncertain Parameters

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A new synthesis technique for highly uncertain linear time-invariant multiple input-output (MIO) feedback systems, is applied to the flight control problem. The uncertainty is due to a fixed design having to satisfy the performance specifications over a range of flight conditions. The aircraft used is a Fighter CCV-YF16. The design specifications differ with mode, so a separate design is made for each of the modes considered: Direct Side Force (Ay), Vertical Translation, Lateral Translation, and Fuselage Yaw Pointing. The first and thrid are 3x3, the second is 2x2, while the fourth is a mixture of 2x2 and 3x3. The outstanding feature of the synthesis technique is the replacement of the uncertain MIO system by a number of uncertain single input, single output (SIO) single-loop systems, with disturbances. The solutions of these SIO problems are guaranteed to solve the MIO problem. The tradeoffs between complexity of compensation and loop bandwidth economy are studied and presented. Performance under severe limiting and rate limiting is included for the Ay mode, and is highly satisfactory. Incorporation of scheduling and prediagonalization are also presented. A digital compensation design is included for the vertical translation mode.

Robust Multivariable Flight Control

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Manual flight control system design for fighter aircraft is one of the most demanding problems in automatic control. Fighter aircraft dynamics generally have highly coupled uncertain and nonlinear dynamics. Multivariable control design techniques offer a solution to this problem. Robust Multivariable Flight Control provides the background, theory and examples for full envelope manual flight control system design. It gives a versatile framework for the application of advanced multivariable control theory to aircraft control problems. Two design case studies are presented for the manual flight control of lateral/directional axes of the VISTA-F-16 test vehicle and an F-18 trust vectoring system. They demonstrate the interplay between theory and the physical features of the systems.

Control Of Uncertain Dynamic Systems

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book is a collection of 34 papers presented by leading researchers at the International Workshop on Robust Control held in San Antonio, Texas in March 1991. The common theme tying these papers together is the analysis, synthesis, and design of control systems subject to various uncertainties. The papers describe the latest results in parametric understanding, H8 uncertainty, l1 optical control, and Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT). The book is the first to bring together all the diverse points of view addressing the robust control problem and should strongly influence development in the robust control field for years to come. For this reason, control theorists, engineers, and applied mathematicians should consider it a crucial acquisition for their libraries.

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book thoroughly covers the fundamentals of the QFT robust control, as well as practical control solutions, for unstable, time-delay, non-minimum phase or distributed parameter systems, plants with large model uncertainty, high-performance specifications, nonlinear components, multi-input multi-output characteristics or asymmetric topologies. The reader will discover practical applications through a collection of fifty successful, real world case studies and projects, in which the author has been involved during the last twenty-five years, including commercial wind turbines, wastewater treatment plants, power systems, satellites with flexible appendages, spacecraft, large radio telescopes, and industrial manufacturing systems. Furthermore, the book presents problems and projects with the popular QFT Control Toolbox (QFTCT) for MATLAB, which was developed by the author.

Aircraft Control Allocation

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Aircraft Control Allocation An authoritative work on aircraft control allocation by its pioneers Aircraft Control Allocation addresses the problem of allocating redundant flight controls. It provides introductory material on flight dynamics and control to provide the context, and then describes in detail the geometry of the problem. The book includes a large section on solution methods, including ‘Banks’ method’, a previously unpublished procedure. Generalized inverses are also discussed at length. There is an introductory section on linear programming solutions, as well as an extensive and comprehensive appendix on linear programming formulations and solutions. Discrete-time or ‘frame-wise’ allocation is described, including rate-limiting, nonlinear data, and preferred solutions. Key features: Written by pioneers in the field of control allocation Comprehensive explanation and discussion of the major control-allocation solution methods Extensive treatment of linear programming solutions to control allocation A companion web site contains the code of a MATLAB/Simulink light simulation with modules that incorporate all of the major solution methods Includes examples based on actual aircraft The book is a vital reference for researchers and practitioners working in aircraft control, as well as graduate students in aerospace engineering.
