BOOK EXCERPT:
Jane Peterson is on a mission. A Gulf War veteran and CEO of a multinational company, she's been crisscrossing the United States for over a year, giving speeches to rapidly growing crowds about candidates she believes will help unify the country. Though her message resonates with an electorate worn down by years of political discord, she's reluctant to do what many are urging her to do: declare her own candidacy for president. For now, she's taking a break from the campaign trail to visit her daughter, Sue, in Atlanta and meet Sue's new boyfriend. What begins as an opportunity to assess her potential son-in-law suddenly morphs into a life-or-death situation. Middle Eastern terrorists have come to the Deep South with Jane as their target, taking Sue hostage to ensure Jane's compliance with their demands. Now Jane has one night to match wits with a dangerous enemy, navigate a near-impossible set of challenges, and come to grips with a deep secret she thought she'd left in the past.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This stunning book opens twelve years after the end of The Cup of the World and tells the story of Ambrose, son of Phaedra and last in the king's line, who is living exiled with his mother in the dilapidated manor of Tarceny. Ambrose's life is threatened by the hooded priest of the Undercraft, an ancestral spirit of pure evil who must end Ambrose's life in order to survive himself. And even when Ambrose is hidden within the house of the Widow of Develin, a hallowed place of learning and haven of education, the priest and his minions slowly and subtly infiltrate within, subverting the minds of those most educated and powerful and leaving Ambrose in mortal danger. This book is about the meaning of kingship, the relationship between father and son, mother and son, the importance of courage and knowledge, innocence and experience. It is a huge and marvellous read - challenging and uplifting.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The aim of this book is to make more widely available a body of recent research activity that has become known as applied general equilibrium analysis. The central idea underlying this work is to convert the Walrasian general equilibrium structure (formalized in the 1950s by Kenneth Arrow, Gerard Debreu and others) from an abstract representation of an economy into realistic models of actual economies. Numerical, empirically based general equilibrium models can then be used to evaluate concrete policy options by specifying production and demand parameters and incorporating data reflective of real economies. Shoven and Whalley describe all aspects of developing applied general equilibrium models, including developing an appropriate equilibrium structure, calibrating the model, compiling counterfactual equilibria, and interpreting results. The authors contend that the Walrasian general equilibrium model provides an ideal framework for appraising the effects of policy changes on resource allocation, assessing who gains and who loses, and the policy impacts not well covered by empirical macro models. The applications in the book illustrate a number of ways in which fresh insights are provided in long standing policy controversies.
