COVID-19 has disrupted the lives of people with disabilities during the pandemic. This, in addition to the ratification of the United Nation's Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in most of the countries, created a need for this book. Policies that mandate stay-at-home and lockdown orders had an unprecedented global impact on the social inclusion and well-being of people around the world, particularly people with disabilities. The book discusses this and examines whether developed and low-middle income countries have been offered social and digital inclusive policies to this important population.

Disability is a universal aspect of the human experience. It will affect all of us, either directly or indirectly, at some point in our lives. Healthcare professionals frequently provide care for and communicate with people who have disability. Many care providers have acknowledged that additional education would help them deliver optimal evidence-based care. This book addresses a topic that has received surprisingly little attention to date--the health and social needs of young adults with physical disabilities. Following an extensive review of the contemporary literature on the subject, the authors report an in-depth study on a large sample of physically disabled 18- to 25-year olds living in two survey areas, one urban and one semirural. The study, which included pediatric examinations and interviews by a social psychologist, found that a large proportion of subjects face social and medical problems, for instance: They have serious health needs that are not being met by the statutory services; they left school with less than adequate skills to enable them to lead an independent adult life; they are without a daytime occupation or attend day centers that are described as "unstimulating" places; they do not receive all the financial benefits to which they are entitled; they are isolated from their peers and lack the social skills to interact with others in a positive and successful way. Parents and guardians were also found to receive little physical or emotional support. These findings underline the need for a better system of providing and coordinating services for this client group, and the authors call for the formation, within each local health authority area, of an "Adult Disability Service" that would have a clinical and planning role in terms of health care and that would act as a linchpin in the coordination of health, educational, social, and voluntary services. Although this work relates specifically to service provision in the United Kingdom, it is felt that the conclusions and recommendations are also broadly applicable to the situation in other countries.

The field of education is under pressure, both external and internal, to improve the services provided to all students. In American society, and elsewhere, there is a concern that current educational practices fail to adequately prepare many students to be productive citizens. There has been a call for educational services that are more responsive to the needs of students, that use effective educational practices, that involve parents and the local community, and that adequately prepare teachers to assume more professional roles. Over the last several decades special educators have addressed these and other critical issues as they relate to students with disabilities. The knowledge gained from these endeavors can be useful in the reshaping of schools for all students, those with disabilities and those without. Indeed, this information may be useful for services beyond school whether for young children or adults. This volume has been written to address how people with disabilities can be effectively served in settings with their nondisabled peers. Because many of the students who are not well served by current educational practices have similar needs as students with disabilities, it is anticipated that some of this information may be useful in the discussion regarding the reshaping of educational systems. It is also anticipated that the mate rial presented will help in the design of more effective coordinated sys tems that serve people with disabilities throughout their lives.

This book is based on the authors' experiences as professors of human relations and community activists at the University of Oklahoma, which has the largest degree-granting human relations program in the United States. The specific objectives of this book are to prepare students to work for the provision of equal opportunities for minority groups and women, develop skills pertaining to leadership, communication, group and organizational behaviors by the analysis of behavioral science data, and to function responsibly in situations where conflict and tension call for coordination of interpersonal, intergroup and organization efforts. The programs discussed in this book were designed to provide participants with opportunities to gain self-insight, knowledge of moral and ethical codes of behaviors as well as group dynamics, communication skills, and cognitive tools used to diagnose problems and select the appropriate strategies for change. Unique features include: historical and current human relations problems and strategies; interdisciplinary approaches to the creation and development of human relations programs; an educational approach to the ways of supplementing and complementing relevant issues; emphasis on social justice and equity; and the similarities and differences among and between culturally different people. Several articles and essays that illustrate a few of the issues that concerned professional helpers may be involved in are included. Special attention is given to the consequences of unequal educational, economic, political, and social opportunities for some of our nation's citizens. This book will be a valuable tool for students who are enrolled in their first courses pertaining to professional helpers, teachers, licensed therapists, counselors, business managers, human service practitioners, and community organizers.

One of the greatest challenges facing modern global health is how to include the most marginalized and impoverished people in international efforts to promote social and economic development. In Disability and International Development disability rights are situated within the broader context of global health and the need for much greater inter-sector collaboration.
