BOOK EXCERPT:
Perspectives in Black Politics and Black Leadership is an in-depth examination of the central components of Black leadership in regards to three key issues: the problems associated with Black leadership at the elite level (high profile activists); the debate concerning the significance of Black mayors; and the changing role of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC). The examination also explores why these issues are, in the view of some, no longer relevant and require radical attention. In addition, this work analyzes: Black voting behavior in the 2000 presidential election; the continuing significance of Affirmative Action and attempts to dissolve it; and offers critiques of current Black leaders. The study concludes with an exploration of the declining influence of the CBC in the Black community and examines the CBC attempts to influence U.S. foreign policy in a conservative political culture. BOOK EXCERPT:
The election of 2008 brought onto the national stage complexitiesarising when the member of a minority group assumes power over national political institutions. It also underlined the limits placed on that power by the double accountability such a figure faces. The question posed in this volume of the NPSR is: Might the ascendancy of President Obama lead to a deracialization of American politics or its opposite? The contributions to this volume examine this question in a variety of ways. David Wilson and Khalilah Brown-Dean analyze black attitudes towards the candidates for the Democratic Party nomination in the presidential race of 2008. Lorenzo Morris asks how perceptions of race have defined expectations of the African American ambassadors to the United Nations. Horace Bartilow and Kihong Eom use a game theoretic approach to examine US drug strategies in the Caribbean.A works-in-progress section follows with personal reflections by Michael C. Dawson and Andra Gillespe. They relate how personal concerns and curiosities guide their research. A book review section provides a discussion about works of interest to scholars studying black politics.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Gary James explores electoral politics from the 1960s to present day, providing a portal to black American contemporary politics. His insightful book discusses the internal dynamic between the civil rights and black power juxtaposition. Two main characters animate the narrative, Spike and CadreUSA, who hold an informal dialogue on black politics from their respective points of view. Apart from the traditional perspectives that are contrasted in the political conversation of African Americans – from Africa to the Caribbean to the American mainland – the election of President Barack Obama in 2008 as the first African American president has overshadowed and colored the conversation among black Americans in particular. This stunning and politically earth-shattering event had an incendiary impact on the popular political imagination, igniting and inspiring many questions and speculations relative to the trajectory of American politics. Some of these questions, speculations, and perspectives are debated by the two main characters. The setting is Harlem, and the period is now.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This ambitious volume brings together original essays on the U.S. women's movement with analyses of women's movements in other countries around the world. A comparative perspective and a common theme—feminism in social movement action—unite these voices in a way that will excite students and inspire further research. From the grassroots to the global, the significance of the U.S women's movement in the international arena cannot be denied. At the same time, the way in which international feminism has developed—in Asia, in Latin America, in Europe—has altered and expanded the landscape of the U.S. women's movement forever. These distinguished authors show us how.
