Judaic logic: A Formal Analysis of Biblical, Talmudic and Rabbinic Logic is an original inquiry into the forms of thought determining Jewish law and belief, from the impartial perspective of a logician. Judaic Logic attempts to honestly estimate the extent to which the logic employed within Judaism fits into the general norms, and whether it has any contributions to make to them.

At Home In Time

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The presence of these values, Deane contends, is not a curiosity but part of a vital and discernible tradition of modern neo-Augustanism that has been previously overlooked. By tracing these writers' common interest in Horace, John Dryden, and Samuel Johnson, he uncovers important links between seemingly diverse modern poets. Deane challenges the whole interpretation of literary modernism, which has traditionally linked the modern poets to the Romantics and seen both as anti-Augustan. Deane concludes that these modern poets share a ready and pragmatic acceptance of linear time, within which all acts of artistic and social creativity must take place - a crucial factor in both the form and substance of their writings. That art, language, and society are inseparable under such conditions was a bracing thought for the young Auden, but a potentially disturbing one for more recent poets.

Poetic License

BOOK EXCERPT:

In 'Poetic License, ' Perloff insists that despite the recent interest in 'opening up the canon, ' our understanding of poetry and poetics is all too often rutted in conventional notions of the lyric that shed little light on what poets and artists are actually doing today.

Catullan Provocations

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Restoring to Catullus a provocative power that familiarity has tended to dim, this book argues that Catullus challenges us to think about the nature of lyric in new ways. Fitzgerald shows how Catullus's poetry reflects the conditions of its own consumption as it explores the terms and possibilities of the poet's license. Reading the poetry in relation to the drama of position played out between poet, poem, and reader, the author produces a fresh interpretation of almost all of Catullus's oeuvre. Running through the book is an analysis of the ideological stakes behind the construction of the author Catullus in twentieth-century scholarship and of the agenda governing the interpreter's position in relation to Catullus. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1996. Logic In The Talmud

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Logic in the Talmud is a ‘thematic compilation’ by Avi Sion. It collects in one volume essays that he has written on this subject in Judaic Logic (1995) and A Fortiori Logic (2013), in which traces of logic in the Talmud (the Mishna and Gemara) are identified and analyzed. While this book does not constitute an exhaustive study of logic in the Talmud, it is a ground-breaking and extensive study.

Seductive Resistance The Poetry Of Th Ophile Gautier

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Gautier's poetry merits an attentive reading which respects his own essential criterion of poeticity, namely, textuality. This is a poetry which puts on display its literariness, that is, its existence as cultural artifact. In so doing, however, it also puts on display the absence of and its resistance to whatever personal or real signified it would evoke or name. Its beauty and self-indulgent pleasure reveal their hollowness and inadequacy. Its chiseled, polished surface renders its borders or limits and its play unsatisfyingly and teasingly perceptible. Its very superficiality allows, invites and seduces the reader to go entre les lignes and perceive the mystery, not of what has been symbolically buried/unburied, concealed/revealed, but of the truly absent, the abîmes superficiels. Chapter 1, focusing on texts from the Poésies of 1830, studies the intextual repetition of Gautier's poetry, the citations, imitations and transpositions which make evident the poetry's displacement of the significant and the personal into aesthetic simulacra. Chapter 2 deals with the poems of Gautier's second collection, Albertus, and analyzes the use of allegory and of humor as further markers of textual substitution. The inherent lifelessness and illusoriness of the textual artifact is revealed in the poems of La Comédie de la Mort, the collection examined in chapter 3. Chapter 4 analyzes the so-called descriptive, referential poetry of España, and finds that the monde extérieur of Gautier's poetry functions to express an absence of self and is itself always shown to be other than the Other. The dimunition of the poetic effected in Emaux et Camées is the subject of chapter 5, and chapter 6 deals with the contextuality, the fetishism, and the eroticism revealed in a miscellany of poems - in particular the libertine poems - which do not figure in Gautier's five major collections. By short-circuiting significations and transforming them into seductive appearances, Gautier reveals himself to be the acknowledged maître of both Baudelaire and Mallarmé.
