This edited thematic collection features latest developments of discourse analysis in translation and interpreting studies. It investigates the process of how cultural and ideological intervention is conducted in translation and interpreting using a wide array of discourse analysis and systemic functional linguistic approaches and drawing on empirical data from the Chinese context. This volume provides a timely reflection of this growing interdisciplinary field of translation, interpreting and political discourse. It includes very recent work carried out by researchers from a range of countries. The chapters illustrate new trends and perspectives in the interdisciplinary research field, and extends previous research. It is widely acknowledged that language and politics are interconnected; Undoubtedly, language assumes a critical function as a vehicle through which to influence politics. The use of figurative language in political discourse is deemed a controversial and dubious issue. On the one hand, it is viewed by some scholars as unfavorable. However, on the other hand, other scholars strongly believe that by using figurative language, politicians can dramatically influence public opinion and through the means of language manipulation, politicians can convey the ideology they wish; they can choose to guide or mislead; or to incite war or bring peace. This book attempts to study the uses and functions of the rhetorical language in fifteen Arabic political speeches, namely, the Iraqi Presidential speeches. It tries to explain whether the figurative language is employed by politicians to achieve political gains or just used for its aesthetic value. The study also investigates the translation of the rhetorical figures from Arabic into English, adopting the Skopos Theory approach.

Political Discourse Analysis addresses the challenges facing political actors at all levels of society and across a range of regimes. It shows how discursive legitimisation strategies can vary on a continuum ranging from the stabilising effects of institutional discourse and the management of destabilising factors inherent in new types of media to the destabilising potential of rhetorical devices and deliberate de-legitimisation strategies used to attack opponents.
