The revolutionary movements in late tsarist Russia inspired a reaction by groups on the right. Although these groups were ostensibly defending the status quo, they were in fact, as this book argues, very radical in many ways. This book discusses these radical rightist groups, showing how they developed considerable popular appeal across the whole Russian Empire, securing support from a wide cross-section of society. The book considers the nature and organisation of the groups, their ideologies and polices on particular issues and how they changed over time. The book concludes by examining how and why the groups lost momentum and support in the years immediately before the First World War, and briefly explores how far present day rightist groups in Russia are connected to this earlier movement.

This innovative survey of European history from the middle of the nineteenth century to the outbreak of the First World War tells the story of an era of outward tranquillity that was also a period of economic growth, social transformation, political contention and scientific, and artistic innovation. During these years, the foundations of our present urban-industrial society were laid, the five Great Powers vied in peaceful and violent fashion for dominance in Europe and throughout the world, and the darker forces that were to dominate the twentieth century – violent nationalism, totalitarianism, racism, ethnic cleansing – began to make themselves felt. Jonathan Sperber sets out developments in this period across the entire European continent, from the Atlantic to the Urals, from the Baltic to the Mediterranean. To help students of European history grasp the main dynamics of the period, he divides the book into three overlapping sections covering the periods from 1850-75, 1871-95 and 1890-1914. In each period he identifies developments and tendencies that were common in varying degrees to the whole of Europe, while also pointing the unique qualities of specific regions and individual countries. "Priest and Parish in Vienna, 1780 to 1880" details the social, cultural, and political transformation of the Austrian Catholic priesthood in nineteenth-century Vienna. It shows how priests, a very important and influential group in Austria, were changed from servants of the state into political activists working for the contentious Christian Social Party in fin-de-siecle Vienna.

A biography of the Christian Social mayor of Vienna (1897-1910). Ch. 5 (p. 171-207), "Running with the Hares, Hunting with the Hounds", discusses Lueger's antisemitism, which many historians have tended to discount. While leaving open the question of Lueger's personal convictions, argues that his antisemitic remarks and those of his party associates exerted an extremely harmful influence which continued through the First Republic and is still felt today, and that only the limitations imposed on him by the Emperor prevented drastic measures against the Jews. Reviews the position of Lueger and the Christian Socialists in the debate over Jews at the university (especially the medical school), the antisemitic productions of Adam Müller-Guttenbrunn's Kaiserjubiläums-Stadttheater (the "Aryan Theater"), and demands for segregation in the public schools.
