BOOK EXCERPT:
Business Process Modeling, Simulation and Design, Third Edition provides students with a comprehensive coverage of a range of analytical tools used to model, analyze, understand, and ultimately design business processes. The new edition of this very successful textbook includes a wide range of approaches such as graphical flowcharting tools, cycle time and capacity analyses, queuing models, discrete-event simulation, simulation-optimization, and data mining for process analytics. While most textbooks on business process management either focus on the intricacies of computer simulation or managerial aspects of business processes, this textbook does both. It presents the tools to design business processes and management techniques on operating them efficiently. The book focuses on the use of discrete event simulation as the main tool for analyzing, modeling, and designing effective business processes. The integration of graphic user-friendly simulation software enables a systematic approach to create optimal designs.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Most textbooks on business process management focus on either the nuts and bolts of computer simulation or the managerial aspects of business processes. Covering both technical and managerial aspects of business process management, Business Process Modeling, Simulation and Design, Second Edition presents the tools to design effective business processes and the management techniques to operate them efficiently. New to the Second Edition Three completely revised chapters that incorporate ExtendSim 8 An introduction to simulation A chapter on business process analytics Developed from the authors’ many years of teaching process design and simulation courses, the text provides students with a thorough understanding of numerous analytical tools that can be used to model, analyze, design, manage, and improve business processes. It covers a wide range of approaches, including discrete event simulation, graphical flowcharting tools, deterministic models for cycle time analysis and capacity decisions, analytical queuing methods, and data mining. Unlike other operations management books, this one emphasizes user-friendly simulation software as well as business processes, rather than only manufacturing processes or general operations management problems. Taking an analytical modeling approach to process design, this book illustrates the power of simulation modeling as a vehicle for analyzing and designing business processes. It teaches how to apply process simulation and discusses the managerial implications of redesigning processes. The ExtendSim software is available online and ancillaries are available for instructors.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A process model is very often used for system analysis, design and management in various application areas. Using a process model has the advantage that it has only to be as precise as necessary within the parameters of the individual field of application, whereas the precision externally is less important. This makes process modeling easier and open for structuring. The contributions deal with different approaches to process modelling, especially in the areas of business process modelling, logistics and production processes and water systems.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The purpose of this book is to convey to undergraduate students an understanding of those areas of process control that all chemical engineers need to know. The presentation is concise, readable and restricted to only essential elements. The methods presented have been successfully applied in industry to solve real problems. Analysis of closedloop dynamics in the time, Laplace, frequency and sample-data domains are covered. Designing simple regulatory control systems for multivariable processes is discussed. The practical aspects of process control are presented sizing control valves, tuning controllers, developing control structures and considering interaction between plant design and control. Practical simple identification methods are covered.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Annotation Featuring contributions from prominent thinkers and researchers, this volume in the Advances in Management Information Systems series provides a rich set of conceptual, empirical, and introspective studies that epitomize fundamental knowledge in the area of Business Process Transformation. Processes are interpreted broadly to include operational and managerial processes within and between organizations, as well as those involved in knowledge generation. Transformation includes radical and incremental change, its conduct, management and outcome. The editors and contributing authors pay close attention to the role of IS organizations and information technologies in facilitating business process transformation. Each chapter places major emphasis on clearly articulating the "knowledge" generated, both theoretical and applied. The book incorporates case studies and tables throughout, and provides fundamental grounding for any stakeholder of business process transformation.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The theme of the 4th International Workshop on Learning Software Organizations (LSO 2002) was “BalancingAgile Processes and Long-Term Learning in Software - ganizations.”The LSOWorkshop series focuses on technical, organizational, and social solutions to problems of learning from past experiences and codifying the resulting best practicessotheycanbesystematicallyusedinsubsequentsoftwaredevelopmentefforts. Through paper presentations, panels, and discussions, the workshop explored the issues of managing knowledge in dynamic domains requiring signi?cant differences betweenorganizationsandbetweenprojects.Challengesdiscussedrangedfromrealistic assumptions on the added documentation burden LSO techniques may require to how effectively repositories have been used in the past to the team and social issues involved in applying solutions created by others. Experience-based approaches were discussed extensively and some reports of initial successes were given along with some instances where the experience base was underutilized. Enabling organizational learning involves more than repositories, search engines, and training. At its core, it involves creating new work practices that value current practices while searching for improvements. The issues involved are both technical and behavioral, aseffectivetechnologymayenticeutilization, butexperiencehasshownthat other factors weigh in just as heavily. There are currently no profound or ?nal answers on these questions, nor are they expected for some time to come, if at all. Hence the need for continued research into these dif?cult issues. This workshop, and others to follow hope to begin to shed light on the issues so an effective and fruitful dialog can begin that can lead to signi?cant contributions to the software engineering and knowledge management ?elds, amongst others.
